what kind of lighting good for reef tank?

VHO bulbs and t5 bulbs are similar in price.

One serious advantage that VHO still does have though is that because the T5 bulbs are so narrow, theyre a little more fragile. I dont think anyone makes, or plans to make, any bulbs over 48"

Putting metal halides over a 48" tank is going to cost you at least $450, probably more.
Not if you look araound. You can get a 175W kit with XM 10,000K bulb for $140 at hellolights.com. You would preferably want 2 kits, so it would be ~$280 + Shipping.

Richard, I have 5-54W t-5 over my 72 bowfront, and I am keeping a mixed reef with a lot of different SPS, LPS and a deresa clam on the sand. I started with 4x96W pc lights, and there is no comparison to the t-5 setup. YOu could not pay me to go back to PC.

That being said, I would personally recommend the 5x54W t-5 fixture from www.aquactinics.com. the fixture is only 9.5" wide, so it will fit on a 55 nicely, the fixture has individual reflectors for the bulbs which significantly increases the light output into the tank. One other bonus, is he designs all of his fixtures with oversized fans, and good airflow so that they can be kept directly on the tank without a significant temp increase.

If you can't tell, I love this fixture :)

Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide!!
