What should I be testing for in order to keep corals

May 1st it was up and running 100% .

Nemodan I will definitely take you up on that I live in Dracut now so I'm not to far from you. Let me get my numbers up here and you guys tell me what you think.

Yes I do have an Rodi

No problem at all.

Do not rush. This hobby is about patient.....easy to say but not easy to stick to it.

May 1st and with some fish in..... did you have some algae bloom that forced you to by a clean up crew ? That's a sign tank is cycling. I am sure you can have some softies there after 3 months.

Keep posting so you can get the forum members support. Here are very knowledgeable members that read this forum. With much more experience than me !!

To arrange a visit to my house to see the tank and pick-up those Xenias PM me.

I was totally off on the startup date it was 3-24-16 when I started running it. Probably a month and a half ago my algea was at it's worst. That's when I bought the cleanup crew. Hardly any algae in there now. Everything is starting to grow coralline now.

My parameters right now are

360 calcium
7kh
8 ph
0-5 nitrate looks like zero to me but less than 5 for sure
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
Phosphate 0
Temp 78
Salinity 1.023

My test kits are all pretty much API the phosphate is a Red Sea. The salinity I used a swing arm and a glass bobbing hydrometer.

Based off what I know I should bump up my salinity and calcium. I will have to get a test kit for Magnesium

Before you dose anything, get your salinity where it needs to be. As you increase or decrease salinity, the other parameters will usually shift with it.

+1 ^

take your salinity to 1026. Your parameters looks perfect. You do not need to measure Mg for now if you are doing 10-20% water changes. Your CA is OK too, and your Alk at 7 dkh is perfect. Nutrients are also good (NO3 & PO4).

For your description you are ready to add some softies and LPS.

Adjust salinity first as requested. Wait for that refractometer.

Do not botherush for now thinking in dosing anything. But set up youreverse mind on weekly WC..... the best for now.

Tested out this refractometer thing is life changing. But here is where I am at

1.026
8. Ph
8. Kh
5 nitrate
0 nitrite
0 ammonia
Temp 78
Calcium is right at 400

Bumping my salinity raised my calcium and Kh

Nemodan if you still have those Xenia and your willing to let me try them out I'm still interested. I'm on vacation next week maybe we can set something up? Let me know

Beautiful set up!! If you want to keep sps the main things to test for are all and calc. You want to keep them stable for SPS. High flow and lots of light are also a necessity when keeping SPS. A doser comes in handy. Additionally you want to keep your nutrients (notrates etc) low so a good skimmer and maybe a reactor will also be good pieces of equipment to invest in.

Initially you will be able to dose manually. Once the demand picks up, you can grab a calcium reactor or dosing pumps at that point.
