Well, it's coming time to order replacement bulbs (arghhh!) and I am thinking of switching from Phoenix 14k to a 20k. I like the Phoenix and thought I would explore a more blue look. I don't see that Phoenix makes a 20k so I am considering XM. Anyone have expoerience with 20k? What brand? Anyone have experience with XM? What temp rating and are you happy with them? I also need to be thinking of replacing my T5's after I replace the mh - I'm looking at Geisman bulbs - anyone have feedback on them? Anyone have T5 actinics they can strongly recommend? Thanks in advance for those that offer their experience with this :)

I have run XM SE 20k and I now have the Phoenix 14k. The XM is indeed bluer and I think it makes the corals color pop more. However, the Phoenix has the XM beat hands down on growth. I'm not sure if there is that much difference between the XM SE and DE.

MikeG, I read good things about the radiums and considering those also. They are a little pricier than the XMs though.

alpha0r, does the xm 20k make the tank very dark? I know the effect of Phoenix 14k as thats what I have now - I still want a well lit tank, just more blue. I am not too concerned about growth rates - I clearly want enough light to maintain good health in the corals and a pleasing blue (more than the phoenix 14k) without having a "dark" tank. Any other "light" (pun intended) you can shed?

I didn't think the XM was dark. Yes the phoenix does seem a bit brighter but the XM is still plenty bright.

The tank that I saw radiums on (Reef55) did not look like a 20k bulb, more like a 14k. So if you are looking for real blue, they might not be for you. I believe he had them on Icecap ballasts.
