will they recover from the fight?

Hi,

I've got a 8" sized ORA birdnest, bottom 1/3 torched by a frogspawn. I finally moved the birdsnest away from frogspawn during a water change. Will the white branches of the frogspawn eventually see new polyps come back in or is it hopeless and I should just trim it down?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

p.s. that frogspawn claims space from anything. Even the RBTA's have moved away. I've made the frogspawn my center piece so hate to cut it back.

frogspawns and the like will send out sweepers at night. My hammer decimated my purple and green Acan before I notice a 3rd of it was dead. You need around at least 6-8" or they will keep stinging what ever they can. Problem is they grow pretty fast and are very agressive

Will they survive? hard to say give them a bit of not fighting and see if you see signs of deterioration then frag them back

I see Boston Reefers is still just a farmer's market to buy/sell stuff. No one has an opinion or experience here on the subject? Should I attempt to let the birdsnest's polyps fill-in, or just cut it down into a couple of frags?

That and if your not in the "clique" forget about it. My opinion I would not want to frag it up unless i really had to. I'd give it some time and see if new growth starts working it's way back.

If it died back then frag it. Plus it is a birdsnest they grow fast, so even if it is just hurting frag it. Fragging stimulates corals growth

When I say frag it cut back a bit where the coral was stung

Cliques and farmer market LOL Oh you guys kill me. While there are friend circles there is no clique and definitely not one behind the scenes in the administration. It is more fractured than one might think. Plus it is a holiday week in the summer

Also with no picture/ in person visual it is hard to give solid advice in this situation

I thought Delta gave some sound advice! I do not think your criticism of the members on Boston Reefers is fair. People are helpful and very knowledgable on this site and I am very happy with the responses (good or bad) that I get when I pose a question.

That said, I would cut off the dead coral. In my opinion it does not come back and fragging will stimulant growth.

I know nothing about the clique you mention and I imagine if there would have been one I would have not been invited to just drop by and hangout for a beer while talking about reefs and just admiring without buying anything. Your mileage might vary, depending on how sociable, how polite and how open minded you are, once you pick on people the invest sooo much into something they are passionate about, like a reef tank, you might experience a "clique" feeling.

your mileage will also vary depending on your tank and the particular injuries suffered by the coral, little is certain in situations that depend on so many variables like reef tanks.

Thanks for some feedback directly responding to only question I asked.

oh, and evidence here shows the little poke at BRS being a farmer's market got a result I wanted, direct response to the question. Also doubled the views and comments to thread in first 30 minutes than prior 3 days.

Not to throw fuel on the fire here but you did open the original post in the middle of the day on a Saturday of a holiday weekend when the weather was beautiful. It might have gotten buried in some of the other threads. I saw the original post but personally don't have enough experience in the matter to have offered any sound advice at the time.

With that said, I hope your corals recover. If I were in your position I would probably follow Delta's advice and frag it to be safe. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

if this would be an exact science there would be a book with a,b,c,d directions and corals would be 1$ a bunch.

good luck!

exactly , thats what makes this fun , and I have to put my 2 cents in on something , I have seen and met some people in this club who have nothing good to say about it , to those of you out there I say this , follow moms advice and if you have nothing good to say , say nothing at all . I respect all those here that try to chime in and help others with issues , they expect no return from it and feel passionately about this hobby . Much respect to those people ,

I disagree with that statement.

People need to speak up and give feedback to the Club. Sure, keep it polite and constructive, but speak up. As Delta has said many times, people need to be more active in the club and forums. This includes helping out, making suggestions, voicing criticism, and offering kudos where/when needed.

I for one have been very active, and I'm very vocal... see my signature line. ;)

Besides, if one person is thinking/voicing an issue, there are probably many more with the same thoughts who won't come forward and say anything.

Anyhow... to quote Pink Floyd "Keep talking...."

Also I don't think anyone said there is no good info here and I also find it hard to believe you have come across that often especially within only 4 months...

Maybe mods should now move this to the Lounge..........

I do want to clarify that I think there is good information on this site, that is reason I posted with questions. But I also have expectation to hear opinions and experiences from other reefers when coming to this site and when the thread gets drowned out by other posts, mostly buy/sell, then the site is not meeting my need. Perhaps I should use reef central instead. I am not claiming to represent the entire body using BRS, only myself. Maybe the marketplace is the real need for the BRS group, so can't fault that this is what the site has become.

I was also curious if I could find data to backup the claim BRS site is focused on 'farmer's market'. The forum intro page lists all threads/posts available of the various forums. For the 'reef knowledge' forums (Reef Talk, Breeding, Advanced Reef Talk, Photography, DIY) there are a total of 47,720 threads, 433,368 posts. For the 'Farmer's Market' (Corals for sale, Critters for sale, Equip for sale, Non-reef for sale) there is a total of 43,197 threads, 283,648 posts. At the face it does appear that 'knowledge' forums are about equal to or even bigger topic than 'market' forums. BUT I am sure the individual forum have different life times. I wanted to know where the focus has been in BRS population for the past year. I also wanted to know if the recent trend is the same.

So I used the advanced search features to find number of threads/posts within the 'Knowledge' and 'market' groups. For some forums this gave a number started in past year. Unfortunately the advance search is limited to 500 returns which limits the number for the popular forums. So I used the date of the 500th return, assumed the posting activity is steady for a 1 year period, than estimated a total number of posts and threads for 1 year.

Results for 1 year period:
Knowledge = 5,900 posts in 1217 threads
Market = 19,597 posts in 3,395 threads

This is 3x more activity in Market threads vs knowledge in past year. Maybe the mods have access to better data and can make a better statement than this derived conclusion. Would love to hear it. However as the long time frame view suggested Knowledge is more popular than market, clearly the purpose of this site has changed. I stand by my 'Farmer's Market' statement.

yeah but if you look at the market vs the turn over rate of people in and out of the hobby as well as upgrade and downgrade, the club mission statement and the fact that the majority of topics have been done 100 time over (including this topic) it makes a lot of sense, meaning much of the information you need can be found in a simple search.

So your assessment isn't very accurate as you failed to input many other factors

The BRS also run 10-12 meeting a years at which they bring in speaker from all over the country (sometimes further) run raffles, library, air meter, light meter, cookouts, then on the site there are photo contests, grow out contests etc etc and of course the Auction. Never mind the hands that will help you when you need.

You can take an outside look or you can see what Mr X posted about what I say frequently, while I have no problem with you voicing your opinion I will give you mine as well. And mine is if you are not going to give the BRS a real trial run then don't judge a book by its cover as you really have no idea what the club has to offer. My biggest issue (meaning I just do not understand) is so many are missing out on what this club has to offer.
