What are people using for salt these days

Interesting. Has there been any third party analysis of the suspended bacteria?

salt is salt..... they all are different. some have more calcium, alk, mag and some have less.
It does not matter what you use, you still need to monitor and dose your tank accordingly to meet your needs.
Red Sea Coral is good but that does not mean that you just mix and forget and don't have to test/monitor what the levels are...etc.
That is why a lot of people still prefer Instant Ocean because they are the cheapest.

Wow all the money i have wasted through the years! Think i will see how much i can get 1/2 ton of Rock salt. Sorted.

This sounds a bit lIke an attack.
I happen to agree with his post. I've had some pretty good aquariums on just old regular I o salt. Granted I crashed when a heater broke and went unnoticed for a week. But that wasn't the salt.

I am in full transition into the whole Aquaforest line. Probiotic and additives. I have been slowly transitioning into the salt . While at the same time dosing the additives . I have noticed very puffy coral and real color pop on the corals. Also I have notice how clear and algea free... "knock on wood". Also setting up a 4 stage dosing pump for their Components 1, 2 and 3! So as for my point of view... it's great so far but I will keep you guys updated on the progress. Other than that all I can say is I really like the Phosphate Minus!!

The people who say "I switched to blah blah blah with blah blah blah in it and my corals look AMAZING!" are often the people who aren't already adding suspended bacteria and trace elements to their tank it seems.
That makes perfect sense since they are now adding things they did not before.

When I add Microbacter to my tank it gets "crazy clear" and the "skimmer goes crazy" also. Sound familiar? It is all the same stuff, just added to the tank at different points either via salt or by hand.
I personally will choose by hand time after time. I think people are too quick to chase the "next big thing".

Remember, 10 years ago there were people using lights, pumps, skimmers, salt, etc that most of us now a days wouldn't bat an eye at because it's "old junk" and yet those corals 10 years ago grew perfectly amazing and had great colors.

Corals from 10 years ago to now haven't changed, we have. The salt business is a money pit because they know if you own a reef tank, you obviously need salt.

There's 3 stages to reefing in my opinion. The cheap garbage nobody should buy, the stuff that works just fine, and the overpriced stuff that usually works great but is a rip off and not worth the added expenses.

Set up 2 cloned tanks. Put IO Reef in one and dose ESV, Tech M, and MicroBacter, and the other do any "fancy" salt like aquaforest or aquavitro and dose whatever you want.
I'll bet the two look exactly the same.

This isn't a rant or an attack, and purely my opinion and time-tested result-driven experience, but I think it's only fair for people to hear the opposite opinion on things with some factual evidence of why I have this opinion.

I have used run of the mill salt and dosed everything up to my eyballs. But I still see better results . So no I am not chasing the next big thing but we are all chasing the next thing that makes taking care of your tank easier. And by easier I mean not needing to run a Calc reactor and to ping off with kalk. But yet I will be running just a DP4 and eye drop dosing every other day. Not only is it easier on my busy schedule but also the cost of the salt out weighs the added cost of electricity to run all those reactors. Just my opinion. I am not taking anything away from reef crystals or coral pro salts . I loved the both of them. So I am not in any way trying to convert people from what works for them . We all like to try new things . So this is just one Reefers experience to another

How long have you kept a saltwater Aquarium?

I'm using Aqua Forest...for a few months now. I'm also dosing w/their components! Everything has shown overwhelming GREAT response and my tank has never been so clear!!

AquaForest ProBiotic is just Great.

I used to rotate Reef Crystals and Red Sea Coral Pro.
Now I add AquaForest reef salt into the rotation.
I prefer to dose vitamins/amino acids/snake oils manually because most of them only last for several hours in reef tank. Unless one change water everyday, putting those additive into salt mix just does not make sense.

I am planning to rotate Red Sea out as I don't think it is worth the money any more.

ReefCrystal and may be Aquaforest Reef Salt (w/o probiotic)

IO Reef Crystals, once in a while Nutri Sea Water. I'm not sure if its placebo affect or not but after the Nutri Sea Water water change you can definitely see a difference (in a 20g tank).
