Trying to figure out overflow and return pipe sizing for a 65 with basement sump. Recommendations on pumps for optimal pressure without over doing it 3/4 return or 1 inch? 1 1/4 overflow? I have had tanks for 30 years just want to see what people have for ideas for having it quiet as possible in the upstairs tank. This pump will have around 12ft head height. Dont really care about the sound in the basement thats where secondary tank and sump will be. I will be having a 65 gallon display upstairs dropping into a 75 into the basement mostly to hold large amounts of live rock with no sand. Possibly half frag rack inside then from there dropping into 30 gallon sump with refugium. Throw some ideas around lets hear it.

Are you drilling the tank for an overflow? If so, get a Modular Marine overflow and plumb it for a bean animal design. Super quiet

Also, with the total gallons in your system, you have to come up with target turnover rate and pick the correct overflow size. I would use the 1600gph overflow with 1” plumbing. With a gate valve and correct size dc pump/ pumps, it should work out great

No, forget the MM 1600 overflow. Use your current overflow setup. Look up herbie overflow plumbing and you should be fine. With 170 total gallons x 5 per hour turnover = 850 gph which you should be able to run through your current overflow with no issues
