I'm wondering if we should go BB or sand... if we go sand then, how much? this is a Aquapod 12g nano.. also I've seen those nano skimmers, is it a must or just do weekly water changes? one other question for now is the filter area, should we treat this as a fuge, i really can see using the bio-balls... any thoughts would be great :)

thin layer of sand , i think it just looks better and the rocks sit better on sand then bb imo. dump the bio balls and fill with either rubble or macro algae.
nano skimmers ime are not worth it. they are very hard to keep at a stable working level since evaperation is so quick in the small tanks.

we have a 12 JBJ with about 2" of sand and it seems just about right.

Weekly water changes, or a few cups a day are fine. And yes, we use the back as a fuge with some Cheeto (sp?) in it. Not sure how much it helps, but the tank is crawling with life.

could you post a picture or 2 of your fuge? i plan on doing a diy one today for chaeto infact. I have an old filter impeller/motor to use with it.

Check out: http://www.nano-reef.com. Pretty much any question and issue has been addressed here at one point or another. The site helped me out a lot when I first got started with my 24g Nanocube. When I found the BRS, I put the 24g in the shed and set up my 90! All in all, if I were to do it again, I probably would've used my old 30g set up and went HOB. IME, the aquapods and Nanocubes look sleek, but are a pita to maintain with the back compartments. JMO.
