Hello,
Im starting a new 75G and was wonder everyone opinion on putting down a layer of egg crate then sand, then marco rocks?

Why do you want to put egg crate in?

Jim

There was a fad a few years ago call the Jaubert (sp?) plenum which involved putting a piece of eggcrate 1/2 inch above the tank bottom, putting nylon screen on top of that, then pouring on the gravel. The idea was to create an area of dead water space below the sandbed to cultivate anaerobic bacteria which break nitrate down. If I recall, there was little to no benefit to that system versus just having a deeper sandbed and if the eggcrate barrier was disturbed, there was a possibility of nuking your water chemistry.

If you're thinking about just laying eggcrate directly on the tank bottom, you'll end up with isolated cubes of sand that will probably just trap detritus since it would be quite tough for sand dwelling creatures to work their way through the bed.

ok kool thanks ill just have a deaper sand bed.

A senior member suggested to me to put down sand, then put the eggcrate where your rocks are going to be then put pvc pipe down for youre rocks to sit on then put sand on top of that to hide the pvc, that way you can always move or change rock positions without killing any livestock, the purpose for the eggrate is to keep the pvc/rock from moving on ya.

That was a suggestion from someone who has it the same way in his tank.

I used sections of half inch flexible tube siliconed all over the bottom of the tank, then eggcrate on top of that, and then sand and rock on my old 55.

That tank grew into a 75 when I moved, and I really wish I had used that same method. I didnt have alot of time to set it up and I thought I didnt need to do it.

All my rock work has "settled" and wont stay where I want.

The eggcrate under a thin layer of sand seemed to hold the edges of the rock, and you could build better aquascaping.

Right now I have my rock just sitting on the sandbed. I know alot of people say thats bad with sand dwelling fish/creatures but I havent noticed any shifting yet. I have 7 nassasaris snails in my tank. I plan on rearranging my rockwork maybe this week. Do you guys think maybe i should throw some eggcrate squares under each piece of rock just to prevent cracking the glass?

I wish I would havd done that , every now and then I want to rearrange the rockwork but can't because mine is in the sand... I did wiggle the rocks till they hit glass bottom but still... I will never be able to rearrange my rocks without killing or possibly killing my livestock.... That is when I get some, but you get the point. (Coming from a newby, but a newby that listens)

there was a large article i ready today on the plenum systems in a marine fish and reef mag my girlfriend picked up for me, and was actually going to ask about them, if anyone used them here.

I was told that egg crate helped to distribute the weight of heavy rocks better and it aids in keeping rock work in place. For the latter reason, African cichlid enthusiasts use it because cichlids are notoriuos diggers. It's also supposed to alleviate pressure points on the glass from sharp edges and corners of rocks.

I put egg crate at the bottom of my tanks to:
1) protect the bottom glass
2) prevent rock slide
3) made my pistol shrimp mad

So do you guys think me wiggling some pieces of eggcrate in my sand my cause a nitrate kick? I plan on doing a 20% WC after I rearrange the rockwork.

I knew i was doing the right thing but i would always take the advice of the wiser reefers. Egg crate it is.:)

Anyone know if it will cause too much of a nitrate kick if I wiggle some crate in my sandbed? And if I do is it necessary to place the crate down to the glass?
