DIY Magnet Cleaner?

Senior Toad Licker
So, looking at my Magnavore cleaner it's obvious it's in need of a replacement pad. And, it just looks like plain old velcro strips which I have.
Are they just using velcro?
I bought it used, what's the technique for removing old velcro.

I have often wondered about doing such a thing. It does look like velcro to me.
I would think a heat gun would release the adhesive in the old pad. I am not sure if a hair dryer gets hot enough but you could try.

Supposedly it's surgical quality velcro which uses something other than regular rubber for a backing. I personally have used standard velcro on the backs of all magnets in my tank (including the algae free maxi mod holders) with no ill effects. YMMV

Maybe try goo gone? Available at most supermarkets and hardwear(sp?) stores;)

I would say you would want pretty heavy velcro to ensure it does not compress, but otherwise I don't see and big issues...

Magnavore sells replacment pads. I think the replacements are 6 buck for a set of 2.
I guess you could use self sticking velcro but the replacment kit includes the felt for the outer magnet too.
I found the pads peels away prertty easy then I just roll the excess glue off with my fingers and stick the new pad on.

I always find that felt pad goes first anyway, I wish they sold those separately, I end up with extra scrubbies and no felts.

Felt

I buy my felt and a fabric/craft store - works great. The type I get has felt on one side and sticky backing on the other. It comes in sheets that you can cut to size and is much cheaper than the "fish" grade stuff.

I am also looking for a replacement for the Acrylic Scrub pads which are just unwoven polyester. I sent my wife to the fabric store to look for these so I'll post the outcome.
