Curious where most people place the following SPS: Right now I have them medium to high light with medium flow.

Pink Lemonade
Efflo/Soli
Purple Monster
ORA Blue Tort
Superman Monti
30K Lokani

Dana Riddle has written a 9 part series on Advanced Aquarist on coral pigmentation. There's a ton to read and process there.
I wish they'd have him write up a final "Conclusions" section. :p

Here's a link to part 8, which may be helpful:

Peter, for optimimum lighting, I believe the pink lemonade would do best on the upper right quadrant of OUR tank! :0)

Agh....the list of must haves from Peter's tank is soooo big...........and the money coming in is so small.........

I'll give it a go for you Peter. Here's where I have mine placed.

Pink Lemonade-Don't have this one, but would guess higher light.

Efflo/Soli-Depends on which one you have. I have one that likes intense high light($500 efflo) and another that seems happier in mediumish light(from a members tank).

Purple Monster-High light.

ORA Blue Tort-Medium/high light.

Superman Monti-High light.

30K Lokani-Medium/high. I'm having trouble getting the color back on this one since I did an experiment switching from 400s to 250s during the summer. I'm back with the 400s, but the color seems to be very slow coming back.

Hope that helps.

It's difficult to define high light accurately.

I am not disagreeing with Don but all the corals he has defined as high light have done better for me under what i would call moderate to low light(by sps standards)

Again i am not disagreeing with Don's recommendation but interpretation of high light can vary greatly depending on wattage, type of light, spectrum, reflectors.

All i am really suggesting is that i don't see a solid answer being possible to your question as every set up will behave differently, flow and nutient levels will also come into play.

I would suggest give a coral 2 months in a spot, studying it closely to see how it reacts and then based on what you see try relocating from there.
As time goes by as long as your reef is stable you will learn how to interpet a corals reaction and place it accordingly.

Thank you Don.

I have the $500 Efflo and right now it's very high up and I have yet to see it color up.

The Soli is right now in medium light and it's coloring up nicely.

I had the superman in medium light and it lost it's blue and red color. I think I'll move it higher up.

All the other sps are in medium light and seem to be doing well.

My main concern is the 30k Lokani. Right now I have it medium to high light but I was just wondering why it's called 30k League Lokani? Is it because it doesn't require much light? It seem to be another very slow grower.

I agreed as well. I've had these guys for at least 4 months now. That's the reason why I'm wondering about their placement.

I have 8 bulbs of T5 on my tank so it's nothing compare to MH but my other SPS are coloring up very nicely. These guys are "newly" added frags.

The slow coloring up Peter could be due to the stress of moving from another tank, dipping, acclimation....ect, ect.

We have a piece of Rose Milli that was slow growing and lost all of its color when we got it. Since then it began growing at a decent pace and has just not gotten a tinge of color coming back (hoping it won't loose its progress after the tank move yesterday). Some corals just are VERY slow to adjust to the new tank IMO/IME.

I always got the best color (especially blues, purples and reds) with high light and high, random flow.

My purple monsters grew very well just under the bulbs with lots of surface turbulent flows.

Same with pink lemonade.

I think that consistency of placement (leave it in place and no daily aquascaping) is equally important. I think that it takes corals a few months to adjust to parameters, flow and lumens and patience leads to coloring-up.

I should have added that I run 400 watt SE 14k Ushios on full size Lumerarcs. I have a heavy bioload anmd as Liam stated, that does make a difference. It seems acros in a high nutrient level system need higher lighting to get the colors to pop and lower level nitrient systems can acheive the same results with lower light. IIRC, most of the T5 setups that acros do well in have lower nutrient levels.

Hi Peter,

I have the pink lemonade and your purple monster. If you can remember my tank, I have both in about the middle half of my tank. The purple monster is under the bulb and the pink lemonade is a bit off to the side. The pink lemonade was a nice yellow but the polyps were not a super bright pink. Maybe it needs to go higher but I was happy with the growth where it was. It lost color when I took it out of the tank a few weeks ago but I put it in the same place and it is coloring up nicely again.

The Purple monster is like i said at the same height as the PL but under the bulb. It is still a nice deep purple too.

I have 250w halide 14kbulb only. Hope it helps?

Chris
