GSP Menace - Kalk paste

Has anyone gotten rid of GSP using kalk paste? I just tried it tonight but it is too early to see if it actually worked.

It does work. Put it down, wait a few minutes then suck it back out. Kalk paste will kill just about anything.

I was able to take the rock out, run hot water over it and scraped off the glass anenome with a razor. This way any spores that it realeased went down the drain. So far.... havent found any others.

Yeah, I wish I could take the rocks out....probably the best way. But the GSP is on my base rock and also on rocks where there are corals so it isn't practical for me. I got most of it off with a dental pick and tweezers. Now I am just hitting the tough to get areas with paste.

This may be a really dumb thought/idea but I have been trying to figure out how to do the same with some PSP and was thinking maybe just covering the area in some reef epoxy. Preferably done in small areas at a time, could it possibly work? Or will the PSP just be able to grow through it if not killed first?

Sorry if I highjacked:o Just an idea I have been considering..

Putty definitely works. But I have lots here and there...unfortunately:p

The GSP was one of my first colonies....really wish I NEVER put it in my tank.

It is really unfortunate that you have to intentionally kill something that you knowingly purchased and placed in your aquarium. Sorry, i like gsp

I like killing GSP:D It grows like a weed and the type I have is not eye candy - it is more brown than green....Ask Denvig. Every time he comes over he tells me how ugly it is. So I am doing it for Denvig...:p

It's a sad day when "pretty" specimens nullify the value of life of those lower on the beauty scale.

GSP is more like on a NUSIANCE scale! It will overgrow cover and smother/kill other beauties and won't stop until something is done about it.

BTW I just leave the kalk paste in place and let it dissolve into the tank.

I remember when it covered every inch of my rockwork. I used a combination of kalk paste/boiling it off/fragging it on brittle rocks

I like it too just if kept unchecked it will cover the whole tank...

Speaking of boiling... what about using a turkey baster to blast it with boiling water? I'm using this approach to kill off an encrusting SPS colony and it's working pretty well.

Whenever I give GSP to someone I always make sure to tell them not to put it on the rocks. It's the reefing equivalent of herpes. You think it is gone for a few weeks, then polyps out of nowhere.

I learned that the hard way. I scraped it off of the rock where it started and dropped a fiew pieces elsewhere. That's why I am paying the price with the gift that keeps on giving...:p

This time I peeled the large areas off and I am now hitting the small leftovers with kalk. I even am waiting to mount frags in the area until the GSP is finally (I hope) gone...or at least for now.

I can tell you putting it in the tank away from rocks`DOES NOT WORK!!! This stuff will spread from one end of the tank to the other, I would find it growing 2 1/2 feet from the mother, it's near the top of my "never to do again" list.

GSP Murderer.

I'm with Chuck. If it gets out of line its gone. Lucky for me i don't have this problem.

I luv killin....kill em all! (joking - this is from a Steven King movie I believe) :D

Yeah, when I did my tank over, I tried to clean as much of this stuff off the rocks as possible when I removed them from the tank. But I guess I missed some of it...I got lots of rock:p . I really thought about trashing the rock or selling it but decided it would be easier just to remove the GSP. Wishful thinking - after a year I am still dealing with it. The kalk worked really well last night though - and refraining from placing frags in the area also helps the accessibility factor. The stuff was starting to choke out my acros colonies so I decided it was time.
