To send down shooting branches that encrust?

I have a frag of ponape birds nest that is doing this. One of the branches is growing down and is starting to encrust to the frag plug. Seem like if a colonie grows larger it is going to need more support and this would be a good way to get it.

Very true about encrusting and getting a strong base before growing verticle.
Makes sense.
