TDS 189 from Well Water Is That Bad?

Yeah. I use tap water with no problems.

I also will agree... The RO stage of an RO/DI doesn't bring it down to zero. My TDS is 200-300 (depending on the season) and the lowest it brings it down is 5-7. I think they do roughly 98% rejection for a 75 GPD. The higher GPD have even lower rejection rates...

I went with the 50 GPD membrane for the higher efficiency versus qty.
So 98% X 189 should bring me down hypothetically to 4-5. I can live with that.

Why not? I keep softies, lps, and sps with no problems. Why would I waste 5 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of water?

When I had my 125 gallon in my wifes tanning salon It had well water and it read 56 on the tds meter, I kept mostly sps and had no algae problems and everything did great. Then again its not just the tds number but rather what type of total dissolved solvents are present. The number doesnt tell you what they are just that they are there. When I broke it down and moved everything to my house in Taunton that had tap water reading 159 I started using the RO/DI again. 0 all the time now. Not all wells are the same. I have heard of wells reading 400+.
On a side note, I went down the street to one of the coin operated "Spring water" stations and the water registered 560 on my TDS meter. And all these people there thought they were paying for quality spring water. Ouch!

well more TDS doesn't mean it's lower quality water.. it means it's not purified, but it doesn't mean it will taste bad. Ever had RODI water?? Taste like nothing.. it's actually quite gross..
.As far as using water with that high of TDS in my tank... well you'd never catch me doing it, but if it successful for you, then so be it. I've seen many people use tap/spring/well water and keep softies/lps... i think it's a lot rarer to have real success keeping SPS with high TDS water.. but i imagine the hardy specimens like most tricolors and montiporas for instance would do considerably well.

I don't think I was getting 1-5 before maybe 1-8 with the combination of low pressure and cold water. Since the water goes threw a calcite tank and then a softener maybe the TDS consists mostly of sodium??
The filters etc came in from Air Water Ice so we shall see how it works out at 75PSI versus 30-45PSI.

At some point in this hobby think I remember your not supposed to drink DI water.
