72 Build thread

Well ... measure twice cut once does not work well for me lol. The thing I got for a sump does not fit in the stand. I spent a long time cleaning this thing & cutting out the unusable baffles. Then by luck I decided I wanted to put it under the tank & the equipment inside to measure out the sections.

Apparently this tiny little back piece on the stand that I did not notice before was inside the measured area (I know I'm bad at explanations) prevented my sump from fitting in the stand.

I went out and bought a 29 for the sump & glued in my baffles last night. The fuge area is much smaller than I had hoped for but small fuge is better than no fuge right?

Oh yea... we went with black background. I ran the idea of navy blue by the husband & he said no.

nice tank Jovana, good luck with the new setup. I see you also have a coralife skimmer. My condolences

haha yea for now I'm gonna do the re-circulation mod on it till I save up enough for a good skimmer.

Scary.... yet funny at the same time.:D

Good luck with the build.

I prefer black as a background as well. Well until you get lazy and put the scraper away and go natural. Always seems inevetable to me at least.

If one wanted to T off their drain line & have a small amount going into a fuge... would you use a smaller drain into the fuge or a gate valve?

both. I'd like to have a way of shutting off or adjusting the flow. I'd probably plumb it so the drain hit the wall of the T (upside down T) and then one side went to the drain part of sump and the other would reduce to a valve then on to the fuge.

you definitely want a gate valve here. Since it will control flow, I would not add the complexity by changing pipe size.....I'm all about simple - if it's possible

The tank is getting wet today!

We plumbed it last night, not professional looking but I'm proud for now... we'll see how it works when the water level reaches the overflow. 1/4th the way now lol... I'm gonna be up all night!

The tank is wet :)

One small issue I have with my plumbing is the drain I split with the refugium does not really work... apparently the refugium side is just a TINY bit higher than the other so nothing really flows over that way :/

here's a pic of my plumbing job.

Did you forget to attach or link the photo? Because I see no photo.

Looks great, think I'll put a shelf in my stand.

The shelf was a MUST in my new stand. I also wanted a back pannel for all the electrical. I used 1 inch plywood for the back pannel, this way I can run all the cords nice and neat behind it, screw in some holders for the cords & all my cords will (hopefully) never get tangled & I'll know exactly what cord powers what :)

I fixed the drain to the fuge by adding 2 45 degree elbows right at the T. I was getting alot of noise comming from the fuge side of the pipe till I did this & the end is now submerged making it quiet. I should have went with a smaller pipe for the fuge side. Just a helpful hint to anyone else looking for quiet drains :)

On the note of quiet drains... Mine are great when working but when I lose power the suction in the drain gets so loud it scares me & the dog. Any way to quiet this down a bit?

jov, how do you like that sqwd 4 the return? have you used it in the past? any problems?

I have never used one before, this week is the first I've ever personally seen one in action. I have it setup on a Mag 9 so there is still a good amount of flow going thru it, I had to close the gate valve a tiny bit to keep it from overflowing the tank.

I was just looking for a cheap way to add alittle more turbulant flow in the tank & it seems to deliver switching current about every 10-15 seconds.

Updates: I purchased a tunze & controler for water movement & played around alittle with the rockwork. I am going to see how it fills out with the rock thats in my 20 before buying anymore.
