adjusting a bak-pak sr2 in sump skimmer

dedfish

That's Mr.Murphy to you!
I have a 55 gallon tank with 70lbs of marco rock. Water went in last friday and I did a 95% water change yesterday. When I first tried this skimmer before the water change it went absolutely crazy with white fluffy foam everywhere. After the water change last night I tried it again and got similar but less dramatic results. Is three a trick to adjusting this skimmer? How deep should it sit in the water? Right now it's about halfway submerged.

Edit: this is just a spare tank to cure the rock in.

Ummm...I would think the 95% water change took out much of what you would have seen coming out of the cup.;)

Right but it still foams a bit out of control. It foams to the point where if the cup is in place it comes out the vent holes and the edges all around the cup and then falls into the tank and starts to accumulate on top of the water.

LOL
Yeah,generally a 95% water change does that.
Is this a new skimmer? It takes at least couple of days for a new skimmer to break in.

hmm...I figured that new clean water would skim less than extremely dirty water that I took out. The skimmer is old, I bought it used. This is the first time I've used it though. I'm familiar with the bak-pak skimmer as I have one of the hang on tank styles on my 36bow.

Put collection cup up as high as it will go and just let it run for a week.....chill. It will break it.

This is it after about 15mins...

just out of curiosity what are you using for water/additives? Looks like tapwater with stresscoat......................which will foam a skimmer to no end........Btw ever notice your skimmer pulls more soon after a waterchange?;) theres a reason for it....

rodi no additives other than io salt.

Yah it's normal after a large waterchange......Kinda like the same effect of changing out a micron pad or filter sock.....
