are you supposed to add salt when topping off tank

I have never added salt when topping off unless my salinity level was low I typically keep my tank at .025-.023 the lowest. My friend that thinks he know everything ( I am sure everyone know. Someonelike this) insist that every time you top off your water you need to add salt and bring the levels to. 023. So two questions one has anybody heard of doing this and what do you keep you levels at?

Nope, you don't need to add saltwater for top off. Now over time you remove salt through your skimmer, tests and wet hands etc but that doesn't need continuous readdition. About 4 months worth of salt loss may require you to up the salt level but I would think that smaller tanks may be more susceptible to this

Day to day top-off is with RODI only. Think of it this way, the water evaporates, not the salt... so no reason to add more salt.

As you mentioned, the only reason to top-off with salt water is if you need to raise your salinity for whatever reason.

Top-off = RODI only
Water change = New salt water


I keep my reef at 1.026-1.027.

I know this, but my friend does not belive me so I'm going to show him what other people say and what they think so maybe this time he will not crash his whole system again. As for my tank I'm running a 40 breaded with a 32gall sump I just finished. I do have a harder time keeping the level on my 4 gal I add salt as needed more often fyi

Salt doesn't evaporate. Plain and simple.

the salt dissolves in water, but it doesn't disappear and become water. the salt is still there, and when the water evaporates it stays behind.

Put a drop of water on the counter and go have a beer. Come back in 20min and there will be a white spot with no water left. that is the salt. Show that to your friend and then smack him on the head.

why not test this theory add salt water to a cup and leave it for a week and check the salinity

I try to tell this to folks with lobster tanks in supermarkets all the time. You can tell a hobbyist but try telling a seafood clerk who doesn't care who makes $8.00 an hour.

His level was at .30 in a 75 gal so he did a 5 gallon water change and sure enuff he added salt to the new water. Now I know when you do a water change you supposed to do that but I don't see how he's going to bring the level down but still adding. He seems to think the salt was built up in his Bio balls. When the level draped all the way down. And thanks for all the reply there nothing better then showing a know it all that me and many other people all agree. But I know he's just going to say they all don't know what there saying. But I will be lol when I just say hay look at my tank and look at yours.

Ask your friend where he got this information. I am sure we would all be interested in the source if he would share it. If you search for how to do top offs, I do not think you would find a single reputable site that says add salt to your top off water. You add salt to adjust dropping salinity as needed, and this is determined by measuring the salinity first. Just adding salt continuously will ultimately cause the salinity to rise and at some point cause the tank to crash.
