Best "Nano" Snail

Aquadan88

Aquatic Idiot
I'm just full of posts and questions tonight. It's mainly because I'm making an order tonight and want to order some stuff for my tank now that it's finally up and running.

Anyway, I was wondering what would be a good snail choice to help with algae growth, but that doesn't get very big. I was thinking Astrea Snails, and one Turbo, but Turbos can get quite large (I've seen golfball sized ones).

Any Comments or suggestions?

Tronchus (sp.?) snails do an awesome job, get to be the same size as astreas.

Astreas are pretty good.

Cerith Snails look like a pretty good bet. How many do you suggest I get to take care of my 15 wide?

+1

On Cerith.
I would think maybe 4 or 5 would be a good start for a tank that size,Dan.

Hey there Bob! My tank is finally up and running. I'll be looking for that frag soon! ;-)

Yea, but do they do a decent job of cleaning up algae?

i would add one turbo to the group just because they clean good. just get the smallest one you can find. they usually die before they get 2" or bigger if you buy them small.

Go with a few trochus and maybe some cerith. IMO trochus are the best algae snail. They feed like turbos on speed but don't get nearly as large.

get a couple of the bigger nass snails too. they stir the sand and eat dead things.

Bumble bees don't do jack.... but they look nice.

I have had the same 5 Astrea snails in a 12G for over a year. Does the job. Turbos will starve in that tank with other snails. They grow fast and eat too much. Cerinth snails are good too, but I think Astrea snails are prettier if that makes any sense.

only thing i dont like about astreas is if the fall on their backs they can't get up and then the hermits eat them. but i have them anyways. they just don't last all that long.

lol, don't worry, I don't really like Bumble Bee Snails anyway. I'm going to go with some Cerith Snails and a small Turbo, and see how that goes.

Good choice.
The Astrea snail are good but they don't seem to last very long.

yeah astreas dont last long at all. everytime i need buy them, i think about how in duece bigalow he goes in to buy snails everyday just to see the girl in the LFS. "give me the ones way at the bottom of the tank" lol!

Haha, never saw that movie, but everyone always calls me Duece cuz of my job. :-p

Trochus snails are #1 In my book, i find these guys will move to the rock work where most others wont. They seem to be better at flipping them self over when they fall to the sand where other seem to lay there and die..
