Brown stuff on the glass

hi all,

I upgraded to a 75g on 07/03/11 from a smaller tank. I used about 60% of the old water from the previous tank and the rest of the water was new water.
My old tank has about 100lbs live rocks so all of that rocks was transferred to the new tank during the upgrade.

The last couple of days, I've noticed the new tank has the brown stuff on the glass.

is that normal?

thanks

Is it sort of dusty like when you scrape the brown stuff off of the glass? If so, it's likely diatoms.

Diatoms are fed by silicate wich normally becomes bound up, used up, or otherwise unavailable in established tanks. The %40 of the water that's new probably brought some extra silicate into the system and that would be what's feeding the diatoms. Give it some time and it will likely go away, or if you run some GFO that will pull some silicate out along with the phosphate.

Also note that when DI cartridges get used up silicate is one of the first things to start to pass through, so seeing diatoms can be a sign that your DI is used up.

DI was new. First time using it when I did the 40%.
will see how it is in the next couple of weeks.

thanks

Tran,

Just wondering how long it took before the "brown stuff" on your glass disappeared? Did you do something special to get rid of it?

If it's dinos (bubbles on the rocks/glass), try raising your magnesium very high. It's worked for me.
