Buying an RODI unit

Hey gang, I am interested in buying a 5 stage RODI unit for my home. I am tired of running to the LFS to get water for my tank. Can anyone make a suggestion as to which type is the best and possibly the best place to buy a unit? Thanks in advance.

I just bought the Typhoon Extreme III from Air, Water & Ice (club sponsor) since I didn't win it at the February meeting. It's 150gpd unit and comes with built-in TDS meter (in and out), a portable TDS meter, overflow switch, tubing, etc. And with the code from the meeting flyer (PM me if interested, don't know if I can/should post it here) I saved 10%. I got 75 GPD RO/DI 5 Stage *PLUS* System from bulk reef supply last year and I am very happy with its performance so far. It comes with TDS meter.
Its only 75 GPD so if you need lot of RODI water at one time you may want something with more o/p like Typhoon Extreme III as mentioned in previous comment..

Did you watch all the videos on BRS in regards to their RO/DI products. I spent an hour yesterday reviewing them myself.

I have a Typhoon III as well and love it. So I'd definitely have no problem recommending something from Air, Water & Ice.

Do not quote me on this. From what I gather they are all pretty much all the same. It comes down to what options they come with and the quality of the connections. Most filters themselves are interchangeable. Some units come with the connections to the water source and some charge you extra.

If you have a 75gpd membrane you can change it to a bigger one later if you.

I like the typhoon III but I am looking at something a little more cost effective. The Compact III which I listed above seems fairly comparable.

Don't get one with an in line DI cartridge.

This is basically the same unit but it has a full size DI cartridge 10bucks cheaper and IIRC they have a members discount for BRS members

One thing to add, when comparing membranes look at the rejection rates. If the rejection rate is low that means that you will blow through DI cartridges/resin much more quickly and that can get very pricy. The 75gpd membrane has a 98% rejection rate so it's IMO one of the best choices for our use.

Also note that RODI units usually don't produce their rated gpd unless in ideal conditions which most of us don't have.

I'm with John, the 75GPD RO membrane saves your DI.
I think the filter housings should be clear for visual inspection.
I like the AWI 5 stages, and that they are a LONG TIME BRS sponsor (sorry, had to say it)

The 150gpd has about the same rejection rate of a 75gpd. So yes you can always go bigger. Just stay away from the 100gpd I throw out my membranes before they get to the rejection rate of a 100gpd.

As John stated for maximum output, a 4-1ratio (waste to RO) at best, you need the right temperature 77 degrees and water pressure 50PSI.

I would get the typhoon III with a 75 GPD RO membrane.

I'd also call around to our local LFS sponsors and see what they have...you might get lucky!

So maybe compare the features on the Typhoon 3 and see if you think it's worth the extra 40 bucks. I think the main things are the backflush feature for extending the life of the membrane and the included TDS meter which itself is like $20. So now that I think of it, it actually is probably worth it. Although obviously the Reefkeeper would get the job done too.

Thank you Jocko. I am thinking I should get the set up with the faucet adapter, that way I can buy a Y and hook it up to my washing machine. I dont have a basement and I think that is the best option. Any other opinions?
