I built a stand for my Marineland 60 cube, not that hard and I'm not carpenter. Here's a link to the plans I used. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1567110&highlight=stand+plans
As long as you have a chop saw to cut all the 2x4 dead even and the right length you'll do fine. I covering it with 24x24" - 1/4" plywood then trimmed it.

Thats's the link you want above... It'll be 48x24". I think most stands are 30" height but shallow tanks are better suited for stands 36-43" height, this allows better viewing visibility given the shallow height of the tank.
You're doing two things... Building the stand which is pretty simple itself, 2x4s and screws. Finishing it is the second and trickier part. It's also where the customization comes in; which ply to use, moulding, sanding, painting/staining, etc.

The plans are for a 48" x 24" but it gives you an idea of how to process. I just made two 24"x24" boxes then connect them together according the the plans and skinned it.
