Tip, sand the cut edge on the pipe to round it off before test fitting the parts. The sharp edge will make it harder for the parts to go together, and even harder to get them apart. Also cut the pipe as square as possible for a good fit. A mitre box, or mitre saw work well. (just don't get your fingers too close with a mitre saw)
Also, be very careful when putting the pipe into, or removing it from the bulkheads, if you lever against the glass you'll have a lot of leverage and it will be easy to crack the glass. I usually loosen the bulkheads and only tighten them when the plumbing is figured out.
