Flushing RO/DI

Liquid

Non-member
Many have mentioned this practice in order to extend the life of RO/DI filters. Is this just hooking the RO/DI up and flushing water through it? If so, how frequently and for how long should I do this?

If it helps, I have a Typhoon III from airwaterice. Thanks for the help.

You need an RO/DI flush kit. It hooks up to the waste water hose. Inexpensive, and worth the time to hook up. (Which is no time at all).

A flush kikt is easy to build.
You will need:
1 ball valve
2 tee's
a short piece of ro/di tubing

Take the wast water line from your ro membrane and take of the restrictor. Its a tiny little thing that will be in the line once you unplug the tubing. Then plug in a small piece of tubing into the waste plug, this time without the restrictor. Place a tee. Another piece of tubing then the ball valve, another piece of tubing, then a tee and then the waste water tubing to the end of that tee. Now you have the 2 tee's with their top plugs free. Take a piece of tubing and put the restrictor in it and plug it in the first top tee. That same piece of tubing you will plug it into the next tee. Thats it. Now when your making water, all you have to fo is have the valve closed, this way the waste water will go throu the tees-restrictor-tee-wastre line. To flush the membrane you open the tee so that the waster water goes throu strait bypassing the restrictor. You will know if its working if the waste water is comming out with alot of pressure like a mini hose when open, when closed the waste water will pour out like you usually see it. Ofcourse you can save all that time by just taking the waste line tube out and removing the restrictor and plug the line back in and flush and then just unplug the waste tube and reinsert the restrictor back in again. HTH

Doesn't the Typhoon III have a built in flush? I just ordered one and it should come this week. Will check it out. I think that is one of the features that I liked about this unit as it extends the life of the membrane.

I think you're right Tom. There is a tube on it labeled "Fast Flush". I thought all RO/DI's had this.

I got a typhoon used and it did come with the flush/bypass valves and also has the auto shut off.

Yeah, the Typhoon 3 has the "Fast Flush" which will flush the membrane.
I have one and like it.

Yep, another reason I love the typhoon. That thing is a top-quality RODI. Just about the only reef-thing I kept when I sold the tank. :)

I flush the unit for 10 or 20 seconds after I use it.
