Forum Moderation Poll

Is moderation on the BRS forums (excluding the vendor experiences forum)....

  • Too heavy handed...too much editing and closing of posts

    Votes: 18 16.8%
  • Just right...moderators help the discussion along

    Votes: 84 78.5%
  • Too weak....more editing/closing of threads needed, possibly even suspensions and bans

    Votes: 5 4.7%

  • Total voters
    107
  • Poll closed .
If you go to the main forum page that lists all of the different sections, right above the list of who's online there is a link for "forum leaders"
Here is the direct link:
http://216.235.242.50/forums/showgroups.php

The sections are a little confusing because of the way it was implimented in the past, but you can see who can moderate which sections and who the 2006 officers and bod are. administrators and supermods can moderate all sections.

I don't like the idea of having to use a seperate identity to moderate or to respond to a normal discussion.
When I read over at RC or RDO, it doesn't matter to me whether the person providing advice is a moderator or not. It just matters that they seem to know what they're talking about.
If it's a question of forum rules or somebody laying down the law, then it might be important who's who - but I'd think it would be clearly evident.

We talked about additional little logos here, displayed under one's avatar: one for paid members, one for premium forum members, one for mods, and one for BoD. Maybe that'd be helpful to differentiate the different positions.

But still, having to log out, then log back on with a different ID to ask a question about kalk would be a needless PITA, in my opinion.
Seems evident that if I'm offering advice on how to procrastinate setting up a tank, then it's just ol' Moe; but if I'm editing your post and asking you not to swear, then it's still ol' Moe - just moderating. My point is: moderators are hobbyists; they're also asked to be forum cops.

Moe and Flighty,

By no means am I supporting the behavior that occured in that thread ... but what I am doing is trying to make a suggestion. Please take this constructively and sincerely.

The discussion that occured appeared to be between two members. Unlike flighty and yourself Moe one person of that discussion does not have a tag as being a moderator ... if you feel its neccesary and flighty as well then why shouldnt it be standard, for all moderators and be made clearly distinguishable...

Different screen names were just a suggestion becasue it is known to me that when avatars change they change on all threads past and present so any moderated arcived thread will aslo change.

But you also created a poll ... asking members to vote on the actions of moderators ... I am just not sure how clear it is to associate moderators from members especially in regards to new members. I appreciate what you all are doing and by no means is this meant to be disrespectful.

If you asking them to be cops and they are to police then shouldnt they at least wear a distinguishing badge of some sort.

Can you see the point!

I see you've changed it but you mean like "girl member":p :D

Len, I think you're referring to Darren. To clear up some potential confusion, Darren's not a moderator of any forums except the Vendor Experiences. He was added as a moderator of that forum when it was started to give us an extra set of eyes to get us through the akward adolesence of that forum.

If you're wondering who's a moderator, you can also look at the top of any forum. Add JoeFitz and Moe_K to that list, and you'll know everyone who can moderate that forum.

I agree that having multiple screennames would be a pain.

Nate

Yes ... But a bit clearer

Actually I am reffering to ONEeye ... I never met Darren in person ... but im sure he is genuine... when not consumed by the drama that at times this club can include.

Extra set? :)

How's that Len? I just never looked into changing it before....just plain ol lazy.
It was on my to do list though...right next to Moe's tank.

We'll look into a tag somewhere, but it is a little confusing with us being moderators of different sections and all. Maybe we could all just add a line to our sig or something.

personally i feel the fact that the user names of the mods is displayed in each forum is adequate

I don't like the concept of a "moderator" tag because we have different moderators for different forums. If you want to know how is a moderator for a given forum, you can look at the list at the top of the forum page.

The idea of a "Staff" tag/badge/icon may make sense but my concern there, again, is that our staff members have different duties and capabilities and just because someone is a moderator in the "photo" forum (for instance) doesn't mean anything when they post in the Reef Talk forum. I feel a "Staff" badge is just as likely to cause confusion, if not more so, than no badge.

Unfortunately there is no current mechanism to make this sort of thing work on a forum by forum basis. I certainly appreciate the issue and I do agree that we don't have a fantastic solution in place -- I just don't currently see a better one.

I would be more inclined to have "badges" for Officers and BOD members (separately), as those individuals are always those things no matter where they post.

It appears that I got my point across... the rest is up to you guys.

Len

Mouth like a sewa? I don't swear...on line anyway...well, not often...OK not in this thread,...yet....

Only thing to add is close thread that are dead, Mostly for sale ads, where thing are posted and then sold. other than that I think they do a good job.

Food for Thought

From the Manhattan Reefers Private Online Forum

The following set of site rules has been compiled by
the moderators.

-----------------------------
This site is a free online community devoted to the
betterment of the NYC Metro area reefing environment.
Access to this site is absolutely free and services
and events are funded through an open donation system.
Please donate.

Because this site is free, we ask that you adhere to
the following set of basic rules that will help our
community stay balanced and focused on the hobby.

General Rules

This is a hobby that primarily takes place in the
home. We have many families, young members, and new
reefers getting started in the hobby. Keep this in
mind when making all posts.

The primary purpose of this site is to interconnect
the reefkeeping community. Since everyone is generally
local, we provide a LOT of freedom for individual
expression. Consider this an opportunity to make new
friends and meet other people with similar hobbies.

We have a dedicated forum for Off Topic posts (The
Nudibar). Access to this forum is available with a
shared password. If you would like the password, send
a private message to a friend asking them if they know
it. If you already know the password, do not post it
publicly.

Posting rules
No exceptions:
Racism
Hatred
Nudity
Copyrighted material (music MP3s, software, photos,
movies).
Personal Attacks
Threats or violent material
Any illegal matter or activity

Moderation:

Cursing: We will permit an occasional profanity if it
is not directed at an individual and is used to
express emotion (ex. Oh Sh-t my tank just blew up!).
Do not take advantage of this and post profanity in
every post. You ARE permitted to curse if you use the

common expletive keys to censor your words (ex.
!#$%^&*()_+). This is generally considered good
etiquette for the internet.

Politics: This is NOT a site for political
conversation. We understand that there are common
political issues that people would like to discuss on
occasion (ex. Transit Strike, local employment issues,
real estate and other legal issues). These topics are
permitted in the Off Topic forum (The Nudibar). The
moderators will shut down any conversation that goes
off course or seems to getting "too heated". If you
want to talk about politics, there are several
thousand other places devoted to this conversation.
Use Google.

Information in your public profile should adhere to
all of these rules. This includes the use of avatars,
profile pictures, signatures, tags, etc.

Items for Sale:
First Post option: It is common courtesy to sell a
priced item to the first person that responds publicly
that they will buy the item with no strings attached.
You are free to sell the item to the last person that
responds, or not deal with specific individuals, but
this is generally enough to earn you a reputation as a
"bad reefer".

Ratings: We have an online trader rating system. If
you want to publicly complain about a transaction or
experience, post a rating or keep the conversation in
Private Messages (PMs). Do not publicly attack another
reefer as the result of a trade gone wrong. If you
have any major issues, contact a moderator
immediately.

Best Offer: The moderators reserve the right to delete
posts where the seller appears to have no intention of
actually selling the items.

Group Buys: Group Buys are fairly complicated
transactions and the organizer reserves the right to
coordinate as they see fit. If you are a new member,
do not organize a Group Buy, participate in them for a
while until you understand what is involved (a LOT!).

Private Messages: Use of the PM system is for private
conversation regarding purchases and meetings. Do NOT
send unsolicited PMs to our members. Anyone found
sending a price list or offer to every member on the
site will immediately have their account locked out.

Note: Manhattan Reefs takes absolutely no
responsibility for items available for sale, offered
for trade, or deals negotiated on this site. If you
choose to buy, sell or trade items via our forums, you
do so at your own risk.

However they seemed to have taken the time to publish their rules and regulation regarding the forum so there is no question as to what is being enforced. I may be wrong but I can’t seem to find ours, except for the Vendor experience rules. Can you point me in the right direction? They are only "almost identical" in your mind if they are not published.

There's a sticky at the top of some forum with the User Agreement, but I can't remember which one. Also, everyone here agreed to the UA when they registered. When we make changes to the UA we post announcements and make them stickies for a while too.

After all that we also are happy to remind people of the rules when they wander astray. I think we're quite lenient and friendly about violations, and remind people in a friendly tone when they've forgotten. Perhaps tone is a bit more stern when we think people should know better or for repeat offenders, and action may be taken by the board when a user is deliberately and continuously flaunting the rules after numerous reminders. In short, I don't think we keep our rules much of a secret. Even without reading the UA, I think most members know what they're allowed to post, and what's not acceptable. If they don't know, we happily remind them.

That said, the User Agreement should by all means be in an easily accessible place. If that sticky has expired or something I'll make sure it's renewed. I know I was linking to it not long ago though. Maybe I'm just overlooking it.

Nate...I think what Dennis is trying to say is that those forum rules are useless if nobody can find them. I can't find a link to them anywhere either.

I agree one hundred percent. If the UA is no longer a sticky (I know it was not long ago) I'll make sure it's reinstated permanently. It's possible that the post was inadvertantly set to expire at some point.

Edit- I was just totally overlooking it. :o It's right at the top of the Web Committee Forum, where it's always been. :)
