Getting back into the hobby. What have I missed?

I stared reef tanks back in 2004 and have had success with most of my tanks. The last one I had was a Red Sea peninsula mixed reef and loved it.

Then back in 2019 we had our first kid and decided to take a break from the hobby. Now my soon to be 6 year old started getting into the reef world based on us going to mystic aquarium almost every other week since we live 10 minutes away from there now.

I decided to get back into the hobby again to share this with both my boys (5 and 3 year olds) as they grow up. I will be starting back either a 20g AIO fusion from innovative marine. I have equipment left to start back up from my old setups, such as the tank, some Nero pumps, a radion g4 pro and an ato.

My plan is to keep it simple for now. Just a pair of clowns with anemones, some zoas and some acans and/or torches. I’ll stay away from sps and demanding corals in the meantime.

In between this break I haven’t had any involvement with anything reef news related. I’ve still been keeping my BRS membership active to support the club knowing that one day I’d get back into it. What have I missed thus far? Is my light still adequate? Any new fancy equipment I can look into? What’s the most popular salt to use to this day? Back then I used the Red Sea salt due to my sps and had good luck with it.

Edit: just noticed that I didn’t post this on the meet and greet section. If it needs to be moved, that would be great! My bad!

Welcome back, love the fact that you kids are involved as this is going hat it's all about. I remember dragging my daughters in the mid 2000's to club meetings and such. Now they're 22 and 20 and could care less lol. Actually, my oldest daughter's fiance is interested and I told him I'd help get him setup in their new house.

Welcome back! There is no shortage of new equipment (necessary or not). Your light is still regarded as one of the best. Radion has released the G5/G6 however many people equate it to iPhone. Where there are not many differences between the generations. It is merely an easy sales tactic for Radion to generate revenue off of reefers who need the newest equipment.

The debate between salts still rages on! Our very own Dong from Acro Garden recently did a wonderful podcast where they talk about different salts amongst many other things. I’ll go ahead and leave a link to the video.

Thanks! That’s awesome that they came to club meetings. Maybe I’ll end up bringing mine to the meetings as well! That would be awesome if you get him setup with a tank in their new house lol

Thanks! I’ve been hearing this term new to me that is mobius when it comes to ecotech stuff. No idea yet what that is.

I remember the whole salt vs salt debate back then haha. Dong was a huge part in my reefing back then. Most of my corals came from him. Glad he’s still in the hobby!

I keep my system very minimalist so I can’t really comment on the mobius. Although I hear a lot of people refer to stuff as “mobius ready or mobius compatibile” I’m not entirely sure what it means. Anyways, glad to have you back, goodluck!

Older ecotech products used wifi, Mobius is Bluetooth. I've had both d preferred the older style

Welcome back, long time no see

Minimalist is what I’m aiming for this time around for now. I’ll stick with my older stuff for now as it’s still working lol

Wonderful! Looking forward to seeing you again.
