Help for Ryans Tank

hahaha....

I have a dilemma ... . Ryan will probably come directly to my house from the airport as I have been 'bird sitting' for him. (what a beautiful bird .... )
Sould I say anything? I don't want to be the one to have to tell him that his tank is dead . .. But it might even be worse for him to walk in on in without some warning.

BTW, I just found out that I have Saturday and Sunday free. Scott, do you need help collecting frags from people? I can be a runner for some of the out-of-the-way places ... and/or help with getting his tank back on track. I have a few things that I can contribute, but I really don't want to be the one to tell him.

Paula

I might just do that ... Let Juniper take the heat!

I am such a sucker that when Ryan told me that Juniper liked to take showers .. I went and bought a shower pirch. Now I take him into the shower with me in the morning, and Rich brings our bird into the shower with him. Only a bird-lover would understand.

Hey! I like to take showers too, I understand. :D

So Scott .. . let me know what you need. We can touch base on Friday and make a plan.

Scott I'm in Worcester. I don't have anything I can offer to the cause but if you need me I can pick things up for you. Just let me know ahead of time and I can be available. I'd like to contribute somehow.

I also missed this thread. It always helps to have as descriptive a title as possible.

>I believe this tank is supplemented with B ionic. He has a Ca reactor but I think it's going on the 72g tank.<

I've also seen that tanks dosed with B-ionic are much more likely to have calcium deposits on equipment. The higher pH probably accelerates the precipitation, while tanks with calcium reactors and the lower pH they tend to have probably depresses the precipitation somewhat.

>is a mag3 susceptible to breaking down because of calcium buildup?<

You bet your sweet bippy. This is one of the reasons why (how many times have I said this?) submersible pumps (most of them anyhow) stink. I just had my Mag 5 on my work tank seize for the second time due to calcium deposits. I replaced it this time with a giant 901 Hagen powerhead! Seems to be working so far.

FWIW, IME the Iwaki, the GRI, the GEN-X MAK4 magnetically driven pumps never seem to end up with calcium deposits. I don't know much about the T4 pumps perhaps their design is a problem as has been mentioned (take the good with the bad I suppose). Most of my pumps (the ones I mentioned) have been operating for several years with no problems. Anytime I take them apart the only thing I see is a little bit of proteinaceous 'goo' that doesn't look like it really impeeds performance at all.

Scott, Paula had an awesome idea. I really don't have any great frags to offer, but I would be more than willing to help out in any other way - collecting frags, help setting up the tank, whatever. I can be available Saturday or Sunday. Just let me know if you need any help.

OK it's Friday - time to make a plan

OK Ladies and Gents,
It's time to make a plan on pick up and delivery of frags for Ryan's tank.
I have taken the liberty of summarizing the donations and locations:
Scott: 2 colonies
Clamm (Westford?): Leather
KAS (Westford): NEAQ frag
NateHanson (Lawrence): Purple tip, neon green polyps
LauraD(Framingham): Elkhorn, Larry Jackson, Green Digi, Orange cap
OneEye - not ready yet
SherryQ(Burllington): yellow/green milli, toadstool
Jango/Daragon(Quincy): Frags
Richard (Framingham): Purple Rim Cap, Pocillipora
UltimateNoob (Andover): Blue Millipora
dedfish (Watertown) : Xenia
Reef55 (?): frags
Shoeib (Saugus): Zoa frag, blue/purple mushroom
Skatezen (Waltham): help with tank
Maurod (?): Colt coral
MattL (Sommerville): Montipora, pink carnation
Reefguy78 (Worcester): pick up stuff?

I can meet people from the South at CRA tomorrow (Saturday) between 10 and 10:30.
I can meet people from the Framingham area at TropicIsle at 5:00 on Saturday.
On Sunday, I can try to coordinate a pickup run .. . but we have a lot of places to get to.
Suggestions?

I am going to start another thread on this.
Paula

Oh man, I missed this thread too. Big bummer for Ryan. We all owe Ryan for doing a great job with our sponsors.

I have a nice green tipped montipora spongodes frag.

But since I know I have some bugs on my acros, I'll donate one large tablet INTERCEPTER.

And I'll throw a mounted piece of Chuck's orange digitata! :D

I'll deliver to Tropic World at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Paula, PLEASE call me if you won't make it there - 508-561-7982.

Hey Chuck - I understand what you are saying. I, too, have just gone through an RTN experience where I lost 80% of my corals. But I was home at the time. I saw what was happening. As awful as it is to see, I was aware of what was happening.

Here is this nice guy, who left a beautiful tank, and has no clue that his pump died and killed all of his corals. How would you feel if you came home to that?

That is why the extra effort . .. it could have been any of us.

Mark - I will be there come hell or high water. (or Shallowwaters!)

Good Luck

Paula,

It is a wonderful thing that you are all doing....good luck with the effort to help Ryan's tank. I was just surprised to see how many people rushed to help out Ryan and thought it was a good idea...one that I wish I had thought of way back when.

So I haven't had a ton of time to read everything yet, this is the first thing I've read/posted, but let me paint a picture. I left Playa del Coco at 2pm saturday on a bus, got to San Jose at 7:30pm, got my baggage checked at 10pm, got on my plane @ 2am landed in miami at 5:30am, landed in boston @ 11am and finally got home around quarter to 1. Almost a full 24 hours from beginning to end.

I walk into my fishroom, and my 50 tall just isn't there, having been replaced by a 65 that was on my porch when I left. Hanging on the side of the tank is a speciment bucket, with all my milli's, torts, tizardis, plating tables, hiller/becca/scavo specialty frags :)All my little baby frags that I finally figure out how to grow, everything, dead and white.
.
When I left, I had successfully started multiple tiny frags into thriving quickly becoming colony sized pieces. I didn't want to buy colonies because I was successfully growing my own-- When I got home yesterday I was planning on selling one and possibly both tanks. I'd need to sell it all to finance a smaller system even close to what I had. I wasn't crushed, because I had just gotten back from the vacation of my life, but at that momentI didn't have it in me financially or emotionally to do all the traveling/wheeling/dealing/trading to get my tank back to where it was when I left for Costa Rica.

As it turns out, I simply came home a little too early ;) Scott Merrill walks into my house around 3 pm, as says, "OMG, you aren't supposed to see this yet!!"

Thanks to so many of you wonderful people, and especially to Scott and Paula (and dawn!), it wasn't nearly so tragic or crushing as this thing could have been.
it is important to note,I cleaned all my power heads and my skimmer pumps in vinegar before I left, did water changes and took care of everything I could think of for both tanks. The T-4 was something like 4 or 5 mos old tops, and in my mind there was just no reason to take it off.... <sigh>....live and learn.

In summary, Thank you Thank You Thank You. I am so grateful.

I'm mounting frags, and I'll aquascape this tank a little bit, and at least it won't be empty, thanks to everyone's little piece. I'm going to dose the heck out of the system in about a week, once everything is in place and settled. And of course, as it grows out, I'm sure I'll be giving away lots of frags ;)

Hi Ryan,
Welcome back. I hope you had a great time in Costa Rica. I'm so sorry about your loss. I'm leaving for Costa Rica this week. Unfortunately, I did not have time to catch up with Paula this weekend to give her frags for your tank - I was too busy prepping my tanks for my departure. So, when I get back I owe you some frags. Any advice on Costa Rica?

Sherry

Ryan, I still have some xenia for you. I can drop it off sometime. PM with some details as to where you live and when would be a good time. I'm Watertown so I am fairly close.
