How long to run carbon?

I just tossed a bag of carbon in the sump. A couple of my softies are not looking like they normally do and not sure if there is a bit of chemical warefare going on in the tank. Figured that it could not hurt to try some (or could it?)

How long should I keep it in there and is this something that I should be doing on a regular basis?

I usually run is 24/7 and change the media once a week. I was in the 50# bulb carbon group buy so my carbon supply is not a problem.

Some people run carbon all the time, some never use it. Carbon removes colors, odors, etc. from the water table. I'd only use it when needed. I don't use it at all.
