i picked up an orange what i think is a sponge walking the beach in glouster today. right know its in my cold 10 gal salt tank but i was wondering if it would survive in the display. ive had shrimp from cold water in there for a few months now doing fine. any thoughts?

I highly, highly doubt it. Even tropical sponges are hard to keep alive that are suppose to be in a tropical environment.

The only sponges I keep are yellow and getting large but they grew naturally in shaded areas of my LR.

If you really want to try a sponge, buy one that comes from warm temps and research the survival rate and what it needs.

I think there were a few people who had sponges off the beach. I am not sure how well they did.

I had collected a handful and they were tried in several different systems. All eventually withered away, lasting as long as 3 months.

One other warning....when the orange sponge dies, it stinks like you just cannot imagine.

My daughter brought some home from the beach when we were at our Cape house, and unbeknownst to me, she brought it INTO the house. :( At the end of the weekend, we left for Marlboro. We didn't come back the following weekend......but the next week, the STENCH when we opened the door would have gagged a maggot.....:(

give thanks for ventilating sea breezes

The other thing to keep in mind is that many sponges die when exposed to air... so if you picked it up at the beach it may already be dead... get ready for the smell :)
