MrX's 120G Build

that's crazy that your powerheads create that much heat

is the temp stable in the sump where the heaters are?

the cardinals look great :)

1) It's not that the powerheads are generating heat, it seems that when they are turned off, or not on as frequently over night then the temperature in the DT goes down.
2) Sump is in the basement, temperature stays pretty consistent just based on "the feel" when I'm down there. Never set up a thermostat or anything to check it for an extended period of time. Sump is raised off the floor about a foot on concrete blocks and a 3/4" sheet of plywood.
3) Thanks! Can't wait to get them into the DT, but I'm going to take it slow and give them a little more growth time.

when you say you turn your pumps down at night, you mean just the pumps in the display tank right? not the return pump from the sump?

i would get a couple cheap $2 thermometers and put one in the display and one in the sump, just to double check the thermometer on your controller or whatever you're using. see if there's a significant temp difference between the display and sump. if the sump is right where it should be at all times but the display loses heat, it prolly means you need to increase the flow between your sump and dt. if the whole system loses heat at night, you may need to add another heater.

Correct, just the powerheads in the DT. I had them running for 5 minutes at: 0, 15, 30, 45 minutes of each hour. My return pump runs constantly and is throttled back; I have a Reeflo Barracuda Hybrid and if I open it up it's way too much. :)

I bought a PM1 module from alex1977 that came with a temp probe and a pH probe. I have some usb cables, pH calibration fluid, etc. coming over the next couple days and I'll get that installed in the sump. I'll look for some cheap/decent thermometers for alternative temp sources.

I was running two heaters in various places to see what happened: DT/DUMP, SUMP/SUMP, SUMP/FRAG. If anything I think have multiple heaters causes more fluctuation then just running one, especially when in different locations.

Two weekends ago I bought a PM1 module with temp and pH probes from alex1977. In order to get it set up and calibrated I needed to order some usb cables, pH calibration fluid, etc. While I was doing that I also bought an EB8, break-out box, two float switches, and a couple new maxijet 600s.

Mid last week I got all the stuff in and set up the EB8 and PM1. I put one of the maxijet 600s in the QT tank to get the cardinals use to a little more flow. They are doing great; eating well, swimming around a bit, etc. I plan on moving them to the DT later this week.

Tonight I did my ~50 gallon water change in the DT and a 5 gallon change in the QT. After that I finally got around to calibrating the Apex pH probe which is reading +/- 0.01 now. With the API test I was reading 8.0-8.2; with the pH probe I'm getting 7.99.

I also did some testing with some warm water, my two temp probes, and a normal thermometer like you'd use to check for fevers. My unscientific test shows the temp probes getting within about 1 degree of the thermometer; I figure that's close enough for now. I figure the thermometer takes quicker readings and doesn't have all the plastic around it that has to come up/down to temperature.

The break-out box comes Wednesday I think, so I need to figure out how to mount my float switches in the sump. I'm figuring on using both to control the water level. Low will turn the ATO pump on, high will turn it off. Also plan on using hysteresis and max times if the Apex programming allows those types of commands. That way I can lessen the amount of on/off/potential spillage.

Next up for the MrX fish-tel I think will be some Lyretail Anthias.

Took a lot of new pictures last night and today to document where I'm at about three and a half months into the hobby. To start out here are some shots of the DT:

And even more corals:

Finally have some coraline algae starting to form! First one you can see one of the shrimp eating the molt from the other.

And to end this update... What the heck are these things?!?!

First is a sponge-like tube sorta thing. Looks like a feather duster sticking out the end. It's just to the left of center... looks like a little pod, slightly darker than the rock. The feathers/head points down on this one. They are all over the tank, sump, etc.

What is this thing next to/under my ricordia? More heads forming, or heads that died?

Tonight I picked up a Red/Green Worm Brain and a 2" Duncan (3-4 heads) from Petco in Shrewsbury. Both were on sale with Petco card; glad I didn't buy them last week. I'll post a couple pics tomorrow once the Duncans perk back up.

Salinity today is 1.0265
pH: 8.0-8.2 API / 8.04 Apex pH Probe
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 0
Calcium: 460-480
Carbonate Hardness / Alkalinity: 6.7-7.0dKH / 2.39-2.50meq/L
Magnesium: 1410-1440

Alk is a bit lower than my last test on 05/17/2012; not too worried because if I recall I did the lower resolution test that time. Mag is up a bit, it was reading 1350-1380.

I'm logging all my tests, along with purchases, etc. so over time I should be able to see the trend. I'll also get better at doing the tests and recording the results appropriately.

Looks great man! Keep the updates coming - sorry I haven't been making meetings, was out of town for the last one.

You'll love the duncan, that is one of my favorites. Your cardinals look awesome, I'm jealous!

The Banggai Cardinals went into the 120g tank about 10 minutes ago (after about 30 minutes of drip acclimation). No lights on except the moonlights for tonight. After midnight I'll put the Apex back into automatic mode and tomorrow they'll start with the normal lighting cycle.

The other fish have all checked them out, including the two cleaner shrimp, and don't seem to care they have two new tank mates.

One of them got a surprise when it swam in front of the powerhead (not directly in front, just in the stream). It popped out and both are now just exploring around a bit. I had them in QT for the last two weeks or so with a maxi-jet 600 getting used to some current, so they should be ok.

There are lots of little caves and such for them to hide in and get out of the current. I'll keep an eye on them tonight, but I think they'll do just fine.

MrsX and KidsX are all happy to have Card and Nal (DaughterX's names for them) in the DT.

ETA - Forgot to mention I found a baby snail in the tank tonight! It was soooo small. Saw it crawling on one of my unintentional frags of my digi. Not sure of the type, it was so small it could be any of them.

hi mr x..tank looks awesome..

i beleive the "sponge-like tube sorta thing" is a pinapple sponge. and im told they are good signs of a healthy tank. great filter feeders

not sure on the thing next to your ric tho

the thing next to the ric almost looks like a tunicate. not positive tho

definitely get that alk up slowly if you can, anything under 7 is pretty low. but if everything looks good and your pH isn't bouncing around it's prolly ok to keep tracking it and familiarizing yourself with the test kits for a little while. do you know what your new salt water tests at for alk? if it's ok, like >8, then definitely do a water change if you notice your alk creeping any lower than it is.

Def not pineapple sponge cause they're bright white

The linked pic is a pineapple sponge great filter feeder the other pic is a vermitid snail(not sure on spelling)they will release a small web to catch food. They can bother some corals.
