My New Mandarin Gobbles Up Frozen Mysis

I noticed this morning that my new Mandarin from about two weeks ago gobbles up frozen Mysis.

I purchased him at Skiptons, and must really thank Steve for training their new arrivals to take Mysis before I purchased them.

Right now, the Mysis needs to be on the sand before he'll go for it, which can be hard in a heavy flow SPS tank with hungry fish above.

From watching him, I think Mandarins might be very near sighted. But when he locks on to them, he devours them. I saw him eat at least half a dozen this morning.

I think he has gained weight since he arrived.

This makes me sleep a lot easier, as I now don't need to be so concerned about copepod populations.

I am still trying to culture my own copepods though.

I have a picture of him when he first arrived, so hopefully, if he keeps gaining weight, I'll have a picture of him more healthy.

Lucky, I want one like that:)

Keep in mind that although eating mysisd is great, it can't be the only thing they eat...Think of it like eating peanut butter and jelly sandwhiches all day every day...

So make sure you get some pods going as well..

I guess my fish have been eating peanut buttter and jelly ever since they're in my tank. almost 2 years. Once awhile, they get some mayo.

they get some mayo with peanut butter and jelly thats a shame, good choice on the fish, i had one that was eating flake but then had a nitate spike and died

The Mandarin is actively hunting for copepods, as is their instinct, and I am still in the process of culturing copeoods. I can't control his appetite for his instinctive food source.

However, it is great fortune that he will take prepared foods. In a closed system, you never know what will happen with copepod populations, etc.
