my re-build thread

my last final is on monday... i'm actually up working on a spanish final project right now... good thing it's my last year of that BS.

Just so people don't get the wrong idea about me though.. my parents certainly do not pay for my reefing obsession =/ .... so it's good and bad. Good because being in HS i have little to no other expenses (care was given to me) so most of my income can get dumped right into my reef (and oh yeah occasionally i can put a little bit of it away in the bank ;) )

I usually try not to tell people my age on the boards because i feel like some of the older people automatically discredit my opinions on things when they find out how young i am.

What do you do for work? are you in the FS business? Dont worry about me discrediting you, Im not that bright when it comes to this. I think its great, I was telling someone I was out with the other night how(whos on the boards) old you were, and they couldnt believe it. It is alot to run one of these tanks, and alot of kids wouldnt put the time, and effort into it. My kids always want a dog, but none of them are willing to do the WORK, anyone can play with a dog, but who is going to walk him when its raining? Joel you are walking the dog. If you wre my kid I would get you one.LOL

Pfft.

Ha Ha. I'm kidding Doo. :p It's like Chi Ali said, age is nothing but a number. Oh. Hrm. Yeah. You wouldn't know who that is. :D

FWIW, I had no idea that you are in H.S. Your level of maturity is pretty impressive... IMH, idiotic opinion. ;)

Hey Joel. I just caught up on your thread. I couldn't agree more with going for it now on the tank. 24" deep 20" tall def.! I know you can make your light work.

+1 stand schmand

Build a new stand to match your old one, put a top on the old one and make it a work station for testing, mixing, storing all the stuff, etc.

Could you make your existing tank a super sump?

Joel put down the Spanish book,, you wont need it. I heard they are all going to Canada, so stick with the English books. I have a question I posted about a fine hair like growth on the underside of one of my caves. It looks likes smoke. It just shimmers alittle. Its hard to get a pic, because its very fine, and deep in a cave. Its only about 1/4-1/2in long. Any ideas???

True. Most kidddd... sorry, young adults, don't know the meanings of responsibility and commitment.

Joel, sorry, but I don't want you for a kid. :p I gots two of my own. And they're still too young to know how much of a dick their Dad is. For now, I'm still pretty cool to them. Though sometimes I get a feeling that my daughter is suspect of me. :D Plus, at your age, you're probably very expensive to feed and clothe. :D And let's not forget your reefing habit...

Ive got them from kinder to college, I like them when they dress themselves, buckle there own seatbelts, My oldest just got her lic this past weekend, so now she can even drive herself. I do miss them being young

Wow! K through college? It sounds like you've got a full plate. I hear ya. My daughter turned three last May. She does everything you mentioned but drive. :D

I think driving may be next on her agenda. Wait, she was pretending to drive my boat in the driveway earlier tonight. She was working the wheel and throttle at the same time. :)

Joel is years ahead of his age and his knowledge in this hobby is like he has been doing it many years. I cannot imagine doing what he is doing in the hobby when I was his age. Way too much time commitment and way too much cash commitment. He does do it himself though, I know that for sure, the cash is from his pocket! Not to mention he's a great guy too! ;) I trust him with my system anytime, and he has been a big help......

Thanks pal ;) .

What are you up to this weekend? Shoot me a pm if you want.

Coffeeee...haha

Are you going to be building your own sump as well?

yeah, if i go 24" deep i'll probably build my own sump out of my current 75, or maybe by a new (used) 75 because mine has a sealed crack in the back panel that has always made me nervous.

so i've had a brilliant revelation! Why buy a tank when i can build one????

Now i'm not all that DIY savvy.. but my dad and his buddy sure as hell are, and they're up to the task...

I'm going to go 48x24x20, with a back corner overflow, starfire front, and possibly sides.. with black silicone seams, and of course rimless...

i just need a bit of advice on what glass thickness i need as well as general tips on how to build it well...

I talked it over with CS and he was going to use 1/2" front and back panels and 3/8" everywhere else.. is it a bad idea for an "amatuer" to take an approach like that? Would i be better off with 1/2" all around?

Also where is a good place to buy glass from?

anyone care to weigh in?

I think you'd be fine with CS' specs, especially since your only going 20" tall. But to err on the side of safety, I'd go 1\2" all around. You might sleep better at night if you ever decide you want really high flow.

How much difference is there in cost?

so yeah.. i'm not building my tank anymore... that was outa my league... CS is still going to build it for me.

I've decided on 48x24x18", rimless with black silicone.. just haven't decided whether or not it's worth it to pull the trigger on the starfire front panel or not..

so yeah, just waiting on funds now..

on the other hand, I think i might try and make my own acrylic sump =).

im in HS too. just thought i would throw that out there

and i would definitely go starfire. i saw a small sample of it up at tropic isle.... and its crazy how much clearer it is. i dont think you would regret spending the extra money for it.

good luck
corey
