My reef is dying

:( I hope that once things are settled for you that you do decide to stick with it, so hang in there!

Sounds like you're rounding the corner. Good work saving what was still viable. I'm sure you're exaughsted, and not too keen on reefing right now, but brighter things are ahead, with any luck. You'll be back on top in no time. :)

thank you Nate. That's very true, i'm exhausted! but if i can save the pieces i moved to the other system will be worth it. these are corals that did not come from my own tank, mostly from exoticreefs and I don't have a parent or backup frag. they look pretty bad but there's a chance they'll make it. I looked for polyfilter at skiptons but they ran out of it. i'll keep running carbon.

Still don't know what caused the crash, which makes me nervous. I can't think of anything else other than the "sparkly heater". I am thinking if the current / fire / sparks could have drastically affected the pH in any way.

Was there any melting or smoking plastic involved?

Chuck it's a Won-pro heat 350W, it was less than 6 months old.

Crash

I think that burning plastics give off all kinds of toxins and carcinogens.....maybe that is what caused the crash?

Sorry to hear of your loss....I have been collecting a few of Tub's corals...I will be glad to send a frag your way once you are up and running again....LMK

That was my thinking as well.

The fire certainly sounds like an obvious candidate for the crash.

That's very frightening that a 6 month old heater would light up like that. were you aware of any cuts or damage to the probe?

I wouldn't think that they'd use line current into the probe, but it sounds like they did. Crazy. :(

Best of luck to your recovering corals. Don't hesitate to ask for help if there's anything anyone can do to help.
