Neal's SPS & ZOA/PALY SYSTEM Coral & Livestock pics thread...

such a shame a nice tank like that for a sump!!!

i suppose ;)

but i am very particular, and it is exactly what i have been looking for as far as dimensions for a sump for quite some time... so for now, its perfect... it wont be altered or baffled or anything, so i am sure sometime again, it will be back to a display, whether its for me or someone else...

You answered your own question Neal...... You do need lfs lol great looking tank...... Looking forward to the transfer

thank you... I really appreciate anyone who takes an interest in my system... whether someone agrees with my views or not, we are all hobbyists and we share a passion together, and we all have it in common...

and jus to note, cuz i am positive some of the peeps who bashed my thoughts and told me to let my system "rot and die" in the thread your referring to, will roll their eyes at me, i had 2 other options for tanks to use that were used, and i damn near bought them both... however, this particular LFS i used, lost every last saltwater fish, coral and invert in the storm, and they have one of the best and largest selections in New England... they carried the largest and best selection of ORA corals you will find amongst everything else they had... and to see them lose them all, is very sad for everyone, whether one uses a LFS or not... so I chose to give them my business in an effort to help out... I jus figured it was the right thing to do at this time... especially since they help out the CT club so much...

and they dont sponsor BRS, but they do honor BRS members with the same discounts they give to everyone else... jus sayin...

but aside from all that, thank you again for the interest in my thread...

it is really sad that people lost so much in the storm.its also kind of you to purchase the tank for the reason you did !

especially you that rather go different routes ,when it come to lfs ,for what ever reasons you may have .

but all in all you have your methods and lfs no lfs they work for you and you show us, and this thread is a great example

good stuff.

Are u still gonna use your t5 fixture and still run the 2 mp40's???? Also how much live rock is in your sump?? Looking at your style I wonder if the tiles colonize bacteria as much as the rock?

yes, i will still use the same 48" (8) bulb teklight i am using now... i will be ordering new bulbs within a few weeks as these have hit the 10 month mark by mid december... I also plan on getting my own PAR meter to keep on hand so I may study my bulbs life and PAR throughout their use...

I am still going to use the same pair of mp40 ES W's i have now, plus i will be adding another pair of mp10 ES's to the lower back wall of the display... for a total of 4 vortechs... the sump will have (2) Koralia Magnum 6's in opposite corners on opposite ends for sump flow... I will also start utilizing a 7" felt filter sock with sock mount as well...

at this time, the only live rock i have is 3 large peices in my secondary tank which has always been plumbed into my system... i will now be using only 2 of them and they will be placed in the new sump from now on... housing the live rock in the sump, is one of the reasons i wanted a sump bigger than the 40g breeder i have been using... and I absolutely feel the tiles house beneficial bacteria also, as well as all kinds of other critters and small inverts that are now growing on them and have been for sometime... they also make a great place for pods of different kinds to cultivate between the tiles where the wrasse and whatnot can not get to them...

Hope this info gives everyone a little bit better idea of what i have going on and planned :) i'm pretty darn excited about the whole thing ;)

and a couple more pics... got home from Lowe's not too long ago, and started on the first coats of black paint on the wood panels that will be the top, the bottom shelf, the back upper wall underneath, and a small rail across the front, but on the back of the steel supports...

I love the look! Very creative. You're obviously very good at what you're doing here!

I am not a coral farmer as some have accused me of... however, like most everyone else, i do frag a bit here and there.

Maybe I read this out of context, or just don't understand, but wouldn't being a "coral farmer" be a good thing? I know I prefer getting organisms tank bred rather than pulled from the wild (as much as possible anyway).

Again, great unique set up and even more impressive is the quality/health of your display. I have some soft corals and they are doing well, but I'm too new to this hobby to attempt some of the more difficult ones, but I'll get there, haha! Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thank you Eric :)

and i dont think you read it out of context... but the only thing i can say, is for whatever reason, coral "farmers", IMO, seemed to be shunned by websites and clubs... it seems like anyone who actually does this with any succes is considered a "commercial business"... which is completely lame, but then again, i dont make the "rules"... my reason for pointing out this in the quote of mine you posted above, is becuz so many people look at my setup, and cant get over the fact that i choose to be different in my approach and display... people cant get over that i dont conform to the traditional "reef tank" and some jus dont like my way of doing things... which is fine... but its been pointed out to me a couple times that it appears that i am a coral farmer... which i am not... i grow corals, jus like most everyone else here and every other site out there... i jus approach things differently and like to focus on the individual beauty and appearance of each and every coral, rather than packing them all in, and even inhibiting their growth by not giving them all their respected space...

hope that all makes sense, and answers/clarifies your questions and thoughts...

again, thank you very much for the compliments... alot of good things are gonna happen with my system in the next month or two, and hopefully the corals keep doing their thing, and follow suite ;)

and here is the glasscages 60g rimless/braceless sump to be, after a 24 hour vinegar bath, all nice and clean :D

however, after finally seeing a glasscages tank up close and without water in it, i gotta say, its the absolute worst silicone job i have ever seen... PERIOD... my goodness, lol, how bad can one do with silicone? well, jus see a glasscages tank... unreal, lmao...

Love the setup. I cant wait till the encrusting monti's become step pyramids, That will be so cool

thanks :)

im supposed to be getting a Rainbow monti here soon to add to the sunset, so that one should be nice after some time too ;)

Neal, I know what you mean about the GC tanks and their silicone job...Ive seen some good and some horrendous. It must depend on what time of day your tank gets silicone...early in the day=not a lot to drink, later in the day=too much to drink :-)

ok, here we are with some more progress on the stand and overall new setup... i finished the poly coats yesterday, and now that they had 24 hours to dry, i thought i would do "dry run" with some things to give you all, and I both, a better idea of what is goin on, what is gonna happen, and what might need to be tweeked a bit here and there... here are some pics of both tanks in place so far, on top of both "shelves"... one thing i noticed right away, is it appears i am gonna have to anchor the top to the stand as it is warped a bit... probably jus anchor it with 4 bolts, one in each corner to keep it all flat, as the rain last nite, with the added moisture in the air, warped it a bit... no biggie, easy fix...

plz note, the stand still needs to have the front rail, which will be jus under the top where i willl attach my vortech controllers and dj strips, as well as the back panel, which will be up and under in the back, still attached... which i will have done either today before work, or sometime tomorrow in between the holiday festivities...

and here we are laying out where the sps will be placed, to give myself of better idea of where and how things are gonna fit together... with the ones already mounted to the columns, and the 6 i have that have been on a frag rack for months, i have 21 sps species all together that need their own spot... with what i laid out with the 4x4" tiles, which all the 2x2" columns will be placed on for better stability and hopefully growth, this is how the placing will look and be spaced out... the columns will be shorter as the tank is 5 inches shorter than the 75g i have been using, but i really like what i can see in my head so far... all of my zoas, encrusting monti's and chalices to be obtianed with the one sunset and miami hurricane i have now, will be placed in the blank spots you see now... so basically the entire bottom will be lined with tiles... personally, i think and know, its gonna be killer...

also, my 3 frag racks will all run across the back upper wall, about 3" below the surface...

my two mp40s are going to be aligned at each end, directly centered over the 2nd row from the front...

IMAG1606.jpg

I will also be adding (2) mp10's, in which the propeller of each will be placed about 5" from the bottom of the tank, along the back wall of the tank, facing to the front... the one on the left will be placed centered in the pic, jus to the left of the far left tile you see in the back row, basically 1 foot from the left end of the tank...

IMAG1605.jpg

and the one to be on the right side of the back wall, will be placed directly between the far right tile in the back row, and the one jus to the left of that (2nd from the right of the back row)...

Sweet.......what are the dims on the deep blue.....looks like a deep dim tank........you have a gorgious sump! (wow first time a say something like that about a sump) maybe cuz its rimless....are they both starfire.....ur deep blue looks really clear.....not too greenish

no starfire on either... though the display, which is 48 x 24x 16 tall, is a much thinner glass... actually jus a bit thicker than say a 40g breeder... so i think since your not seeing the inside of the tank through as much iron as a thicker glass panel would have, it appears to be clearer with better visiblity sorta speak... which imo, is pretty sweet ;)

i really love this tank...

and of course bud, thank you very much for the compliment :)

btw, im still drooling over your dimensions since you came by that one day... your tank is sick!

i love my tank...the dims are perfect....im really not a big fan of long tanks...since they are so common....like anyone else...each one has to be unique in there own little way......i love deep dim tanks...especially when u see them from the side...u can see ur rock ork from behind........my tank is doing very well...though to keep with the maintenance i do a 45 gal water change weekly to keep nitrates lowor undetectable...which i dont mind..because is all done by 2 mag 5's (one drain out,,,1 pumps new water in.) at a hit of a button........using red sea coral pro salt which helps me keeping my levels steady(i love it)...still have to dose but not much....im not going to deny....keeping a 250g tank is a high maintenance. a pain and time consuming but once u get the hang of it...u are all set....i took my time setting this tank p and done well......if power goes out i got back up and it is also flood proof........i cant Waite to see ur new setup man..!especially if u know what u are doing and u seem like u are on the correct road in the perfect car to keep the miles going....so i wish u best of luck and dont let the road come to a dead end!.....lol.....btw i havnt got my calcium reactor runnng...stilll doing alot of studying on it....but so far my tank is doing excellent without it!

o the dims on my tank is 5ft long by 3 ft deep by 30 inches tall 3 panels starfire :D

i really love what u are doing though...........i cant waite to see it up and running..though ur current setup is nice also.....
