Orange-spot filefish moves onto that big Acropora head in the sky

Oxymonacanthus longirostris aka long-nosed filefish. One of the fish people always ask about when they see my tank.

Well, I had him/her for 4 1/2 years, and it was likely full grown when I picked it up. I obtained it from Aqua Addicts back in April of 2004. It'd come in by mistake and it was looking REALLY thin when I picked it up. It fattened up well in my frag tank. The photo below was taken in my frag tank. I later moved it to my 110, and when everthing was transferred to my 400 G, the filefish went too. I tried to pair it up on two occasions with no luck (chased the new fish into hiding). The whole time I had it it never ate Anything other than coral polyps, Acropora, Pocillipora, and Hydnophora were it's favs, never ate any species of Montipora. Last week I'd noticed it looked a little thinner than usual, but there were still tons of coral for it to dine on. I also notice it was 'sleeping' earlier than usual. Normally about 30-60 minutes before lights out the fish would find a favorite spot to perch between branches of staghorn Acropora. It would 'lock' its top fin and crash out. Just before it died it was perching probably 1 hour earlier than usual.

I never found a body, but the 'tank' probably ate it.

Don't know what the lifespan is in the wild, but I don't think mine died prematurly due to the captive environment. No condolences necessary, but I thought people that'd seen the fish might like to know.

The corals are afraid of that fish, look not a single polyp extended in that photo.
Be intersting to see if you get better polyp extension now.

I think I've been working too long, but the color reminds me of the clown from the movie Spawn.

That was a cool fish - got to see him a year ago. At least you got to enjoy him for 4+ years :)

Quite likely, though I've noticed that when I take frags and move them to my frag tank it takes many weeks before they start to extend fully.

That was certainly one cool fish and it is a shame to hear he is no longer dining on your lovely corals.

I know you said it's not necessary, Greg, but I'm sorry about your fish, we get very attached to our animals and 4+ years is a long time.:( Well, geez, you certainly gave him a good life in that tank, that's for sure, acros galore!:D

I got to see this fish in person, it was amazing..

Yes, it certainly was. :)

sorry to hear Greg.
Although I know you purchased him basically to give him a chance at life. I am wondering if you are planning on getting another or are you now going to let the acros have the tank?
He was a beautiful fish and as you stated a main attraction to see in person.

I was thinking about how Greg was able to provide a good life to a fish that eats SPS... I think that's a great tribute to Greg's reefkeeping ability... So I think congratulations are in order for being able to...

Yup, Greg is a good guy who has cared very much about this hobby and this club. :)

I'm going to give it some time. When the tank is better filled out I might get another.

Thanks for the compliments and well wishes all. :)

I am deeply sadden by this news. It was probably the most unique fish in home captivity I've seen. Greg did an incredible job to meet its requirements.
Here is a shot when I was over at Greg's 3 years.
April, 2005.

Filefish

That fish was really colorful and really stood out in your tank Greg. Every time I came over for frags I had to look at him. When you got that Goldflake Angel, I wanted one, then when I saw that filefish I wanted one. Glad I got the chance to see both of these in your tank(s).
