Overfeeding...Is it a common issue in this hobby?

Everytank is different and feed for different reasons.

I have for fish

XLG yellow tang
large emperor angel
5 disbar anthias
1 fire goby
1 damsel
mdium purple tang

2 fire shrimp
4 emerald crabs
1 sally crab
2 star fish

I feen pellets and flake 1 a day and brine one a day I feed a good amount

When I started my tank I planned on heavy feeding so I am heavly skimming

WIth an emperor angel not to pick need to keep him happy

Had 2 brs people over saturday first words where that emperor and purple are fat. my nitrates do not spike seing I got a large skimmer when i setup tank

Bottom line you need to take the system in account nit just fish and tank size

I feed every other day for the last 20 years with no ill effects and all the fish are fat and happy - ask Ray039 - he bought a algae blenny from me and he said "That is the fattest Blenny he has ever seen".

Fish will naturally look for pods and other food sources if they are not being forced feed every day. Getting them to eat things crawling and stirring in the tank is as natural as one can get.

What works for one may not work for another - and it also depends on the age of the system and the amount of fish per gallon.

I only feed my tank about twice a week...keeps nitrates/algae in check and the fish have been fine for 1.5 years as well. I have a clown, purple firefish, bangaii cardinal and a velvet damsel in a 55 gallon. I can defintely tell when my husband takes care of the tank when I go out of town...algae seems to pop up within the week. I think he likes to see them eat!

I guess I should put my feeding regimen for my 10G nano. A sprinkling of Formula 1 or 2 (alternating, leaning more toward the green more algae-based pellets) in the morning and afternoon every day, with a few shavings of frozen mysis or frozen pods before lights out (roughly 1/10 of a cube). "Sprinkling" defined as ~10-15 pellets or until the clowns stop eating.
I don't skim yet, my DIY skimmer is almost complete, thread coming soon! No phosban, no carbon, just a chaeto fuge and 20% weekly water change, I'm religious about my water changes. My HOB refugium grows a nice crop of chaeto. No algae except a bit of diatoms on glass/sand sometimes, depending if the cleanup crew is being lazy. The clowns decimated the amphipod population when they were added.
