what do you guys think about these? are they easy to calibrate? a member tested my salinity from a frag he bought from me and my salinity was 1.030 kind of horrible my hydrometer is off wack, I am looking at one of these on ebay
Thanks

I'd be willing to bet your hydrometer is more accurate than his salinity monitor. If his monitor is dirty or out of calibration it will read wrong. Maybe your hydrometer is off too, but there is just as much of a chance his is wrong.

good point but I would like a monitor anyway :) it would be easier, do you have one steve? if so do you like it?
Thanks

I did have one but sold it. I found it easier to just check with my refractometer. I actually thought that was what you were talking about...Your hydrometer could be off by that much. Mine always was off. I would go with a refractometer. The thing I didn't like about the salinity monitor was that it doesn't read in SG. It gives you another number that you need to convert to SG.

o i see and the refractometer gives it in sg? I think i know which refractometer to get I have looked at them perviously
Thanks

Thanks for your help

I have a Pinpoint and love it. You do have to convert the reading, but once you know the range you really don't have any conversions to do. For example, I know if mine is reading between 52-53 then I'm good (this converts to 1.025-1.026) I also have a refractometer and I periodically check that my pinpoint is on target. But it's great to have it always on in the sump - one glance and you can tell immediately if there's something wrong. I highly recommend getting one, but only if you have a refractometer too.
