putting ball valve on garbage can?

Just bought an RO/DI, and am planning on attaching it to my laundry water connection (bought a connector to do so). I would like to set it up so that it will go into a trash can sitting on a chair in the closet next to the washer/dryer in the laundry room, so I can put my bucket underneath the spigot (ball valve????) and voila! Will this work?

I am hoping to set it up so that I mix the salt right into the garbage can & just have the one container to work with (other than the buckets to lug it to the tanks). If I put in one heater and a powerhead on the bottom pointing up, will this work okay - especially for something taller than it is long)?

How would I seal the hole to insert the ball valve (or other type of spout)? Should I use something other than the ball valve?

I would use a bulkhead fitting and then hit a home depot as they have pvc ball valves and if you need reducers. My only concern would be mounting the bulkhead to the Garbage can. The Garbage can walls are not that thick and it may be tough to get the bulkhead to remain sealed. Another thought also is the stability of the ball valve, they are stiff to turn and that may also be a problem keeping the bulkhead sealed. What about using a power head with a hose out of the trash can? When I worked at Fins and Fur we had a set up using a rubbermaid trash can, a power head inside and pvc piping with 2 ball valves you can use one power head to circulate/mix the water, and pump it into your pail.

That's what I do. I have a mag 12(the only thing I'll use this POS for)with a hose attached. I put the pump in my tank with the hose in the sink to pump out, and then I put the pump in the 55 gallon drum with the hose in the tank to pump water in. Someday, I need to automate some of this stuff......

I wouldn't mess with a bulkhead etc. Just get a plastic spigot. I'm sure you can order one from Savko or USPlastic, or you can go to Walmart and buy a 5g drinking water jug, and remove the spigot from the lid of that. (Maybe you can even buy these spigots at a hardware store, not sure)

They are a faucet that you stick in a hole in the bucket, and they have a plastic nut with gasket that secures them tightly to the hole to create a seal.

Here is what you need... This is how I rigged my Rubbermaid Brute... Anybody need any of these bulkheads? $7.00 a piece w/ gaskets... I can get the drum valve taps for $3.00....
