Quarantine Question

Hey everyone,

Today, I am done with a medicated quarantine and have some fresh saltwater mixing up. I have a couple of questions.

1. Can I do a 100% water change to get rid of the copper or, should I be lowering the copper level slowly? I don't want to shock the fish if that's a thing.

2. Assuming I get them into fresh saltwater tonight, can I put them into the display tomorrow or should I have them in fresh saltwater for a few days before the display?

Maybe I am overthinking this..

Thanks for the help!

If you have another sterile tank I would use that as a “clean observation” to transfer them into for a week or two. That way you can watch for symptoms, as well as feed medicated foods for internal parasites.

My protocol is based on Humble.fish:
  • 1 week of conditioning
  • Ramping up copper
    • 3 days typical
    • 7+ days sensitive species
  • Theraputic copper / Formalin / Praziquantel regimen
  • Removal from medicated system for Formalin & methylene blue baths, then into clean observation
  • 2 weeks clean observation feeding praziquantel & metronidazole medicated food
  • Into DT with social acclimation box

Wow. You've got a pretty strict protocol but I'm sure it's working out!

As humblefish said you can do a large water change. If using the same tank as the quarantine to now observe certainly do a minimum of 30 days before doing that water change. Or you can do 15 days then transfer to a clean sterile tank with no copper

If the fish have been in therapeutic copper for at least 30 days, then you can do a large water change. Meaning, copper doesn’t need to be ramped down slowly.

However, if you only treated with copper… I would, at the very least, also consider deworming the fish with prazi: Praziquantel
Today is day 21 at therapeutic levels. Is that not enough? Go another week?
