Raising alk

I am using canister filter as a reactor I was just thinking that it wasn't working good enough. When my phos reading was at .50 the gfo, carbon and phos pad were in need or replacing. So I did all that AND added phos guard plus a 20% wc and my phos only reduced to .25 . I was expecting better results from all the different products that I am using. Thats why I asked about the reactor. I have been doing 20% wc every 2 weeks( maybe 2 1/2 ;) ) Should I go to 10% per week instead? I am afraid that if I do a big 50% wc something will get pissed off and die. Also if I have a 75 gal tank with about 100lbs of rock and 50lbs of sand would you guess that my total water volume is approx 50 gallons?

You can change 50% without it causing any problems. I just had a crash and changed 90% to fix it.

I always figure on the low side when guessing water volume. I'd bet you are closer to 60g's (no sump), but 50 is a good number to work with. I'd spread that water change of 2-3 days though, you don't seem to have an emergency. Test you new saltwater for po4 too....

Just want to stress again as someone pointed out earlier, if you are changing large percentages of your water column make sure you do all you can to match salinity, temp, and alkalinity. Also make sure the water is oxygenated even by just having surface agitation when mixing the new saltwater.
