Red Wine Palys Melting. WHY??? :(

In the past two weeks 3 frags, each with one polyp, started to melt 1 after the other. All 3 frags are in different location of the tank with different height. The 1st one was high up in the tank and I thought it was getting too much light. Than 2 days later the one on the very bottom started to melt. And today the 3rd one with is partially shaded is starting to show sign of melting (it's white mouth is wide open and skirt is closed up). I have not done anything different and no other zoas or palys are melting except for the Red Wines. What is going on? This 3rd one I dipped with betadine just to see if it will help. Temperature is between 78-80 and I have 250W MH 14k.

I lost my triple reds due to a swing in my ALK.

My ALK is right at 10, however my calcium is a bit low at 350.

How do you know that it's due to swing in ALK? Did you lose any other zoas?

That stinks Peter, If I could help I would. I do not have any useful info on the problem. Good luck

It's gotta be my worst week ever since I started my reef tank. It's one of my prize paly of them all. I've lost a few of them during shipping but manage to get these 3 polyps for more than a month and just this week this happen. :(

maybe some kind of bacterial infection??

The 1st frag I didn't noticed if there were any or not, but the last 2 I didn't see anything on them. Just all of the sudden the mouth starts to open up and then follow the closing of the skirt. What's weird is no other palys or zoas are melting or even acting this way. Even if it was an infection why just the Red Wine? Plus all 3 are in different location of the tank. Very Odd I think.

I've read that they sometime would just melt for no reason but I believe there has to be a reason. I just want to get some idea from you guys so I can try to narrow it down. I know it's not my parameters. I'm wondering if a temperature swing between 78-80 would cause this. However why would this only affect this one type of paly?

Come and get all the palys or zoas you want.

I have blues, eagle eyes, sprites etc.

I'd really prefer them gone.

I would love to get them but at this point my tank is so packed. Thank you for the offer tho. :)

I really can't believe I'm turning these down. *sigh*

I would gladly take those off your hands.:D Then Peter can come get some frags here when he has his tank straitened out.

Yes, that sounds good. I'm a bit depressed at the moment to introduce any more zoas/palys at this point. I need to find what's wrong with my Red Wine paly.

Well I was taught by the best (PVH). I do need to get some good shears and then I can handle it.

Sweet, Let me see about getting those shears tomorrow and I will send you a Pm and set it up!!!

Peter I got the google thing going looking for an answer for ya.

Peter have you thought of a peroxide dip or a furan dip? Popped up on google have never done these myself.

I have used peroxide twice on one colony that was looking like it had an infection and took a toothpick and ran it around the edges off each zoa to get any remaining crud off...Someone posted on this a WHILE back...I can try to search for the link-but I'm not so good at that:o. It seemed to work for me anyway, maybe it was the "infection" or bacteria I had personally and not what you had-but they did the same thing-just starting gaping open and melting....HTH...FWIW...GL!

I'll give that a try. Thanks.
