Reliable ATO's.

G.T

Salt Alien
I am looking for a new ATO. I have a Tunze, some where but cant seem to find it. What product is the best for reliability and Safety? What do you use?

I use a reefkeeper float switch, has worked well for years now

I am using a Liter Meter III and have for years without any issues. They are a little pricey, but well made and reliable. I have 2 of them, and use one for a constant water change, and top off, and the second for dosing.

Good Luck Derek

I use the TUNZE Osmolator. I have used it for well over 5 years issue free. The only issue EVER was self inflicted when it kept saying error when ti was time to turn on and I figured out was due to interference from being among too much other electronics/current/magnetics...... so i have it plugged in by itself away from all the other electronics and i have been issue free for years, I def recommend it.....it has the glass eye/sensor so no moving parts to get stuck or fail. I highly recommend.

Second the Tunze. I used one for years and never had an issue although I'm going with a some float switches and a breakout box for the APEX on my new build.

A lot of good info in this old thread:

Here's my take on this topic:

I have had EXTREMELY good results using the Tsumani AT-1 level controllers (they run about $60, but IMO are well worth it). These are pressure activated level controllers. It would be very difficult for them to plug/fail. In the 10 years I've been using...maybe 7 or so of them, I've only seen one fail. Still....I don't trust anything...and here's how to safeguard for failure:

You plug your pump into your level controller...when the level controller says add water the pump pumps.....you plug your level controller into a cheap timer from Home Depot, or you can get an expensive digital one for $20, but some say they don't work that well. You guesstimate the amount of evaporation in one day. You know the flowrate of your pump. You set the timer so that the pump can only be on a small amount of time over the amount of time needed to pump to make up for evaporation.

For other safety considerations....depending upon the type of pump you are using, if you place it above both your sump, and your water reservior then if it springs a leak the water there will be no excess water added to your sump.

This is the technique I use for all my tanks. It works very well, and I never need to adjust depending upon the seasons, etc. The only thing I find annoying is that I have to refill the reservoirs!!
