What size tank is it??
I can't really think of any obvious pros, but the biggest con is see depending on it's location is the amount much water it could siphon from the display in the event of a return pump failure.
I was thinking about that.
This is no different than a drilled return. They both do this. Just drill a siphon break, which is a pro because you can't do that effectively to control siphon height on a drilled tank. The water line will be where you place the break where a drilled tank water line will be at the return. This at times can be lower than your highest coral. To compensate, people in the past used Check valves which have lost popularity due to leaking.
What about if the return is drilled 12" below the waterline? Where would the siphon break be located? In order for it to be effective the top of the siphon break would need to be above the water line of the display, which I suppose you could accomplish through a clever layout but I've never seen anyone plumb their tank in this manner (again assuming the return is far below the waterline).
