RODI quesstion...

When I got my RODI unit I was told that you shouldn't make small batches of water. As in if you make water you should make 10-20 gallons as it is hard on the filters to make smaller batches, something about filter creep. Is this correct or do some people make smaller amounts of water without negatively affecting their filters?

If this is correct and I need to make 10-20 gallons of water my next question would be which is worse on the filters.......making smaller amounts of water or sitting unused for 7-10 days. Because if I have to make 10-20 gallons of water at a time I won't have any need to make water for another week of so and didn't know if the water sitting in the filters and membranes would be a issue (small tank, I know getting a larger tank would solve this)

TIA!

P.S. WOOOOOOT I don't have to carry 5 gallon buckets up to the third floor apartment any more:):D:D:cool:

Barry, as long as you cover the RODI you've made, it should be OK. I make mine in 100 gallon  batches, more if I am doing water changes. That way I only have to worry about flooding my basement when I forget to shut it off every 2 weeks.

The thing I mentioned was 'membrane creep', which allows higher TDS water through the RO membrane for the first few minutes of RODI making, which is harder on the RO and also depletes the DI faster.

Yea I keep the water I have made covered and have no problems with that, I was asking if leaving the RODI unit unused for a week or more is a problem, as in will the pre filters, RO membrane, and DI mildew? Just wanting to make sure there won't be an issue.

Thanks Jay, I figure you or somebody would see the post and set straight my "creepin" thoughts.

The water there in PVD is from the Scituate reservoir, arguably some of the best water I've ever tasted. There's enough crapola added to it that mildew should not be an issue. There's also little 02 for it to grow.

I could be wrong, but it's how I've been running my filter for the past few years, and no long term issues, other than less back pain from hauling water in from the outside :D

I agree with JayM..... just remember to run your RODI for a few minutes to let the TDS go down... mine starts at about 20 ppm but after running it for a few minutes it goes to 0

i dont think it takes longer than 1 minute to have the tds reduce to 0. the amount of water that comes out in that amount of time is so small when diluted into 5,10,20 gallons it wont even register on a tds meter. mine starts around 5-6 and decreases to 0 quickly.

I was just trying to get the point across to let it run for a little bit.. maybe that's what I should have said.. mine takes 50 seconds to get to zero... but for good measure I let it go for a little more.. ;)
