Running an external pump on an undrilled sump

Yes you just have to prime it first and then make sure that the intake is below the waterline at all times or you will lose syphon. Basically have a tube come straight up out of the tank and put a T on the top. The vertical part needs a slip/thread coupling. The threaded part will later be used to prime the pumd and then capped once you fill it with water. The horozontal part of the T goes to the pump inlet. The outpout plumbing is as normal.

Yep..... just have the pump below the waterline and the plumbing coming up over the side to the intake..... if you lose power it still holds it's prime. My sump was like this for a year and a half till I finally drilled and install a bulkhead to get rid of some 90's. I may have some old pics if you want to see....

I would say if it looses its prime for some reason it would probably burn it self out. But it would work just don't loose power

I intentional shut power off many times to test, and because the pump was 18" below the water line it never lost prime. No problems after 18 months, only change due to the availablity of a drill bit, bulkhead and the look of less plumbing.

You would say that.....:D

Let me start the digging.

Look here Kevin, just take out the SCWD and you can do what Bob said, or use the T like I suggested to prime. As Bob said, this design won't lose syphon in a power outage. Only if the inlet comes out of the water.

The link is for a closed loop, but woprks just the same for a return pump.

I ran a pan world 100 for a couple of years set up as described above. Never lost the siphon, many poweroutages exct.

Using 4 x 45 deg fittings insted of 2 x 90deg fittings helps to minimize any plumbing restriction to the inlet.

I found a couple of photos, but I am having a problem uploading onto the new pc with vista.... different photo programs or they weren't save rite. I will try again in morning.

loud panworld pumd

just got my 120 going today i have a panworld hd 70 is it normal to have a loud humming noise will it break in and quiet down i mounted it on rubber bushings but its still loud

Ok, figured it out.... was opening with wrong program for import. So: Ignore all the wood, etc. Tank cracked and was replaced with 40 breeder and lowered the pump to bottom of tank..... The red line is where the water would normally run, the blue is where it would end up when the power went out. Water would stay in the horizontal section of pipe and never lost prime.

The new setup has a bulkhead drilled 3" off the bottom in the return section, has two 90's right to the pump. I also put in 16" of flex hose to reduce vibration noise.

Hope this Helps
