sick clown

^ this is true but you still would want to do the fw dip with the right temp and ph regardless just to buy yourself some time. the more time you have the better. Dont wait till more symptoms develop just move it to QT ASAP even do a water change to get your tank going with water from your DT and then get a small power filter with some of the bio media in there and get that fish in there and treat him!

You said you set up a QT -- is the salinity is the same as your 29? I am confused by your concern about acclimation.

I'm a little confused, do we have a clear idea which parasite we think we're talking about here? Is it a parasite for sure, or could it just be low O2 in the tank?

If it's ick or low O2, IMO a freshwater dip would do more harm than good. If it's velvet/brook, then the dip is probably indicated ASAP. Then again, if that were the case the fish would probably be gone already.

I agree,
Everytime I've read about any cases of brook the fish was dead in less than 24 hrs.

The QT tank was set up with water from my 29 during a water change but no biological matter, just in inexpensive carbon insert filter that hangs off the tank. I got a o2 test kit and it read between 6 and 7 ppm. pH is 8.0, no ammonia or nitrites, salinity is 1.020 just like my fish store's. CO2 was2.1 mg/L.
No luck getting him to eat, so I tried a 45 second freshwater dip. I agree with Ng that it's better now then after days of not eating and getting weaker. He's inn the main tank, but in a breeder box so he's not fighting the current. Now that he's in there he's at least swimming horizontal not straight up or down and wobbly. He's still gasping and not eating, but no signs of any white spots/slime/mucus/ etc. Fins and scales look perfect. Any thoughts on moving him to the QT tank and trying copper, formalin, erythromycin, SMZ/TMP or some other treatment? Thanks everyone.

good choice with the breeder box.

Still gasping and not eating not eating so we're off to the QT. I need a vote. I picked up Quick Cure (formalin & malachite green) and KanaPlex (kanamycin sulfate). Neither seem to require the fish to eat them to be effective. Which should I try first? The pharmacist in me says go for the shotgun approach and use both. There's no firm diagnosis, and since he hasn't eaten in days I probably won't get a second try if I guess wrong the first time. Or maybe I've just seen too many episodes of House.. "treat him for everything...."

This may be a little late. But did you happen to observe the water after the FW dip?
Gill flukes can also cause problems with the fish gasping. If this was the case some would have dislodged and ended up in the bottom of the treatment container.
JMO,but I'd go with the formalin & Malachite green in the QT.
I treat incoming fish at the right dosage in a container for an hour with this before QT.
I believe I use Kordon's Rid Ich+

Considering the lack of a clear identification of the problem, but assuming it is a parisite problem, I'd be inclined to go with a copper treatment.
