i like the idea personally of draining into the barrel, then gravity feeding the barrel into the skimmer compartment of the fuge, then through the fuge back to the tank..

I am debating that or the method Jennifer suggested in her first post about pumping water from the fuge into the barrel and gravity feeding back to the fuge, I think Macro also mentioned something along those lines too.

I just need some plumbing parts and to sack up and decide how I want to plumb this so I can drag 30 gallons of RODI up to our 3rd floor apartment.

well my thoughts on draining it into the barrel is that if you cut a hole for the gravity feed towards the top of the barrel, you could very comfortably keep 20 gallons of water in the barrel, as well as fill your fuge.

Because if the hole is cut near the top of the barrel, it gives you room to drain give or take 10 gallons of water from your display 20g to the barrel, before it would enter the fuge, more water volume in the fuge is better IMO then it is more water volume in the barrel, because the barrel is just that... volume where as the fuge is filtering the water as well.

Obviously my gallonage above is just estimates, but i hope you can get the idea still.

By the way, you are def. a BRS addict, Nov 07 join date and already 1,000 posts... its funny and don't take this the wrong way.. but i really feel that by simply reading your posts from the time you've joined and now, i've seen not only your tank, but your knowledge grow as well. =)

I agree fuge volume is a premium for nutrient export.

Alright I have the barrel plumbed into our system adding 23 gallons of water at the moment, some of that will be displaced later when we add some live rock in there for added filtration.

I took the drain line from my overflow box directly through the top of the barrel and it runs a little over 2/3's of the way to the bottom of the barrel. The water then travels up through the barrel to exit near the top out of a bulk head and into the fuge. So far everything seems to be working fine.

You know you could put a filter sock at the end of the overflow tube in your barrel. This would help to keep the detritus from building up. Also if you put sand in there the sock will diffuse the flow a bit, so the sand does not get blown around. Not to mention your system water will be nice and clear.

If you do this buy 2 or 3 that way while 1 is in use you can wash the others and have them ready to go. I have 2 filter socks on my system which I have to change out every 3 or 4 days.

Right now I am not to worried about detritus build up as there are not rocks or sand in there and I can easily siphon it out weekly. Later when we put some live rock in there for added filtration I am thinking about putting a power head in the bottom of the barrel to help keep things from settling in there.
