Topics for April Meeting Lecture

Matt L.

Non-member
Dear BRS Members,

I have been honoured by Moe and invited to give a presentation on a scientific matter at the BRS meeting at the end of April. My only question was: what should I present?

I am posting to try and get a feel for what people in the club would like to hear about. If you're interested in water chemistry issues, Dr. Randy will be coming back to speak, from what I hear, so he would present on those matters. But if there is another topic you would like to hear about, please post here and we'll see what we can come up with. Possible topics include:
  • Nitrification/Denitrification and their associated bacteria (i.e., the Nitrogen "cycle")
  • Other, non-nitrogen microbial/cell metabolism issues
  • Hydraulics, fluid mechanics, and plumbing issues
  • Will Nick and Jessica make it?
  • Other ???
I will let you know if the topic is something that falls within my background*,

Matt:cool:

* P.S.: My background is in environmental engineering. It is this diverse, inter-disciplinary field that permits me to cover a wide range of topics. I initially got my degree and then worked doing hydraulic design. I then went back to school to do research on nitrifying microorganisms in wastewater treatment plants. So as you can see, I would feel comfortable presenting on either the microbiological or fluid mechanical aspects.

I'd like to hear more about designing a good manifold. I know you've made a comment in the past about the Calfo closed loop and improving on it's design (At least that is what I thought you were saying).

i say hydraulics, fluid mechanics, and plumbing issues with all the cool formulas and greek letters. ahh, memories of my engineering classes.

And we'll get NoDoz to sponsor the meeting. ;)

One more vote for plumbing/fluid mechanics, and hydrolics.....zzzzzz, cough. /gasp, yes,,, errrrrr, could you repeat the question?

Can you speak just a bit about what additives to use and which are not needed?

Is Owen capable of being a smart a**? (Sorry Owen, wife served up a softball there!)

Seriously, I go for the plumbing issues. That would hold my attention. (I'll bring a latte for good measure!)

It sounds like people are very interesting in hydraulics and plumbing. We'll see what others have to say. I appreciate suggestions, such as a discussion of manifolds. In fact, I did a lot of manifold design in my former line of work.

This would also be an excellent discussion, as there are plenty of people in business telling us we need to add things to our tank, and we need to pay lots of $ for those things.

I do fear such a talk could turn controversial, although I am confident I could present it in a completely objective manner.

There are two difficulties with me giving a presentation on additives: 1) Such a discussion would be well presented by an expert reefer (which I am not) instead of a scientist. I could talk about additives in general, but an expert reefer or marine biologist would be needed to talk about what the additives do, and 2) I would need outside data about what is already in our reef tanks in order to make any meaningful recommendations, as the main questions with additives are: are we short on this stuff to begin with?

Hey now you silly NH peple, I am having a 4 year colge degry, and my momy tells me i'm "wicked" smart. So nun of dis here Schmart Arse comments =)

I was actually being psudo seriouse, I would love to lear/hear about fluid mechanics and Hydrolics.

IffersTankSlave, I take my coffee Med Reg.

When we loose the ability to make fun of ourselves, I think we fail as people.

parody

n 1: a composition that imitates somebody's style in a humorous way [syn: lampoon, spoof, sendup, mockery, takeoff, burlesque, travesty, charade, pasquinade, put-on] 2: humorous or satirical mimicry [syn: mockery, takeoff] v 1: make a spoof of or make fun of 2: make a parody of; "The students spoofed the teachers" [syn: spoof, burlesque]

now back to the issue here. Who is brining the coffee ;).

no serius, So far, it looks like everyone is interested in the fluid dynamics lecture. There won't be a test after....right?

Watch it Owen, that remark will put you in the trunk on our tank tour....

That reminds me, I need to bump that thread up.......

BTW, I could always use plumbing tips.....one of my weaknesses in this hobby

Ha, just kidding!:)

Actually, I have lectured on fluid mechanics (plumbing and hydraulics for us) at the College level, so I am more than prepared to make it as interesting as possible. Try keeping a bunch of undergrads awake at 9:05 in the AM,

I think it promotes homosexual normative values.
