Topics for April Meeting Lecture

Oh, there was some nonsense in the media a while back about how certain groups thought Sponge Bob promoted homosexuality, esp. with regard to his relationship with Patrick. I've seen the show, so I thought it was all extremely silly,

Matt:cool:

I think it's extremely silly that there's a sponge-man in a car with an octopus, and someone relates this to human sexuality?

Shouldn't we be worried about the bizzare interspecies sea-creature breeding that the liberal entertainment conspiracy is forcing on our impressionable young children?

My personal favorite is the idea that TinkyWinky, a velvet snowman-creature with no apparent gender, who's carrying a purse must be planted to turn our toddlers into the members of YMCA!!

Well, it was brought up by a Christian group. What else do you expect from them?

Don't make me move this thread to The Lounge!
Get back on topic.

Spongebob lives in a pineapple under the sea Moe. ;)

Anyways, I think some fluid dynamics would be a useful topic for all of us, and one that it sounds like Matt is best suited to address.

Nitrification might also be academically interesting, but I don't think there's nearly as much practical application that we could probably draw from that topic. The bacteria seem to do that process pretty well without us. :)

I'm surprised that no one wanted to hear a lecture on whether Nick and Jessica will make it:(

Moe, sorry for the digression, but the sexuality of phylum Echinoderm and phylum Porifera interbreeding is technically marine related;)

It sounds like people want to hear about hydraulics:)!

Matt:cool:

I think a myth busters type meeting would be cool matt. Does a closed loop produce head? How much flow does a two 1/2" pipes equal the flow of one 1" pipe... How do I eliminate the gurgle in my overflow...do i need that pressure rated pump for application X... ican't think of anythign else :)

I am a little late to the thread, but based on the description of your background, I would love to see a presentation on the differences between the filtering and hydraulic techniques used for large volume commercial wastewater treatment versus how those filters and techniques have been adapted to reef tanks (or not, as applicable).

A mythbusters meeting might be best done by a combination of expert reefer(s) / technical expert(s) / coordinator with some extensive preparation time for the meeting?

Either of the above topics would be great to see.

Kent

Just for clarification, this would be for the meeting scheduled for 30 Apr 2005.

This is probablly obvious but I would just add that I would be interested in hearing about plumbing / hydraulics specificially related to reefing.

By that I just mean to suggest a lecture really focused on applying the scinece of plumbing / hydraulics to the everyday idiot's (like me) level on plumbing their reef tank. Things like how to make or calculate how to make overflows with the least restriction, a good explanation of how a duroso works and how to build and tune one, how to plan the best pipe and overflow sizing.

Matt,
You described yourself as the "scientist", Just offering suggestions as to ways to dumb down and focus the science talk for the illiterate like me :)

Thanks for your contribution

HEY! You guys making fun of my road trip avatar???? I thought it was cute, but I guess 'cute' can be a controversial adult theme :D

Sorry Moe....

OK, back to business!

It is wicked cute. I wasn't making fun of the avatar as much as I was making fun of the people offended by it. I love SpongeBob (but not in that way)

Who are Nick and Jessica ? and what are they making ?
Nick Leachey and Jessica Simpson, like, duh:p!

I have a female housemate, who despite all else, just loves those magazines like People and (my favourite) In Touch Weekly, which I, in turn, love to make fun of. While sitting down trying to think of possible lecture topics, I was reading the covers of some of them, and thought it would be funny to present on topics like: Did Paris Hilton have a jealous e-mail towards Jessica Simpson in her (hacked) Blackberry?

Jimmy, don't sell yourself short here, bro. Everybody needs to learn something for the first time. I wasn't born knowing hydraulics, I just went to school for it. I had to learn how to plumb all on my own (the hard way), for there's no college course in that!

That said, I do realize the target audience, and will try to make concepts as learnable as possible while conveying as much material as the audience can handle in the time allotted.

I basically live here on this board, so if you have a question about something, don't hesitate to ask any time in the forums or after the meeting.

In sum, I feel that the best lecture would be on Applied Hydraulics for a Reef Tank. I believe I will start with basic hydraulics and the all importance concept of Piezometric head (often referred to as "head"). In a reef tank, what "head" to do you have at various points, and how do you lose that head through plumbing. I can then discus how hydraulic devices such as overflows, pumps, and valves work, what they need, and how they affect your tank. This would include proper sizing and selection as well. I can discuss other hydraulic devices such as manifolds, how to properly make one, and common misconceptions. I don't feel I would give the best lecture on plumbing. While I do consider my plumbing to be my best reefing skill, it certainly is not outstanding with respect to the club, and there are a variety of other people who could give equal and possibly differing viewpoints on plumbing. However, plumbing is conjoined at the hip to hydraulics, so I will try to cover all the hydraulic issues without going too far into plumbing.

If anyone would like to hear about something specific, please ask. I already have requests for the Calfo manifold, how a D'Urso standpipe works, Do two, 1/2" pipes equal one, 1" pipe (no, they don't). If you ask, I'll be sure to try and work it in,

Please include an explanation of head pressure on closed loop pumps. This keeps coming up, and nobody seems to believe me when I explain it (not that I necessarily blame them :)), and I'm sure you can give a better argument, and borrow some authority from the podium. :)

Sure will.

Yeah, I know, that was the only comeback I could think of at the time;) Work is driving me crazy.

I'm really anxious for this meeting and hearing your talk....I'm also very interested in durso pipes, I"d like to build one so I can get rid of the 'mickey mouse' set up I have, although it's been working well so far. Manifolds, what are manifolds???

If the Horse that is closed loops has not been kicked or voted for enought I would like to kick it once more..Also could you add something along the lines of maximizing flow for certain kinds of tanks..ie SPS setup vice a Softy tank, in terms of minimum/maximum recommended flow rates etc.

*kicks horse* *horse Neighs*

Yeah, I will certainly put a great deal of effort into reef hydraulics, including:
  • overflows
  • returns
  • closed loops
If I had my preference, I would like to have a small tank with a small sump, drilled for a closed loop and a D'Urso standpipe, and insert pressure guages into the plumbing at various points to show people what I'm talking about.

Unfortunately, the flow required to keep various different types of reef environments alive crosses from the objective science of hydraulics to the subjective art/hobby of reefkeeping, and those topics would best be described by an expert reefkeeper, rather than someone with a background in hydraulics. I can tell you how to work with flow and get it to your tank, but once inside, the science turns into an art.

I'll volunteer my apartment/tank. :D We can meet at my house, and you can do a hands on demonstration where you re-plump my sump and overflow, and install a closed loop system. This thread is getting better daily.

Where did that extraneous apostophe come from in Rich Durso's last name, Matt? ;)
