Transfering live sand ?

Is there anything that needs to be done to keep live sand alive while transfering from tank to tank ? Right now my tank isnt up and running yet. can it all be done at once or should I wait a day to add the sand after it's been up and running and up to temp ?

I did it all at once, when I moved from a 55 into a 90 gallon.
I just used some tank water to help rinse the sand before adding it to the new tank.
I put down egg crate first so my rock went in on that then the sand and lastly water.
I kept the sand submerged in a few totes and once in a while went and rocked it backk and forth.I had to finish some plumbing first so it was about 1 1/2 before it was all in the 90 gallon.
