trying to help a fellow reefer rebuild his tank and asking for help from all

About 6 months ago a close friend, neighbor, and mentor lost his reef tank due to a fire. Not only did he loose his tank but almost lost his house as well. He had a fire in the basement of his house in the early morning hours during a hurricane in the fall. The fire did most of the actual structural damage in the basement but the soot destroyed everything on the ground floor. Everyhting in his ,living room and kitchen etc was covered in soot. It was a very depressing thing to see, luckily the entire family made it out ok. At this point Mikes house is a week or two away from being able to move back into. He stopped by the other day and came into see my tank and chit chat. This is the same guy who gave me his 4 bulb t5 fixture for my tank after this incident. He was very impressed to see the changes of my tank and the colors and I could see him start smiling from ear to ear getting lost in my tank. He sat there for a few minutes and started telling me about how he didn't know if he was going to start a new tank again. This man had a 75 gallon reef tank that was stocked to the max with every coral I could think of. And not to mention this tank defied everything ive ever read or was told about tanks. This was a 75 gallon tank with a hob filter a 4 bult t5 and a heater. that is it. no sump,no skimmer no nothing. 10 gallon water changes a month(all tapwater) and never dosed anything. This was one of the most beautiful tanks I have ever seen in person. Mike is a true enthusiast and really help me get goin in the hobby once I decided to get into corals. He sold me colonies of corals for 20$ everytime I walked over to say hi I would leave with a chunk of something even if I didn't have money. He truly enjoys the hobby and wanted to spread the beautiful corals he had grown with others. Most of us try to sell some frags to help offset the cost of our expensive "vice" but still ask for reasonable money for what they are worth compared to lfs. He was a guy who sold me a 10 head frogspawn for 15$. enough to buy some food lol. would have been a 100$ easy anywhere else. Either way my point is I have convinced mike to get back into it and he seems stoked now. I sold him on the idea of a 40 breeder drilled with a small sump. He wants to do a smaller tank and we both love the demensions of the 40. its like a smaller 75. I have a few frags that I am saving for him and attempting to frag some more of my stuff for him. My problem is that my tank is still young and I don't have a lot to spare but willing to cut almost everything I have in half for this guy.I am asking for anyone who is willing to donate a frag here or there to help a fellow reefer rebuild his tank to please contact me. Im not asking for much and im sure any little bit will help. I told him I have some frags for him and hes beyond excited and anxious to get his tank set up as soon as he can move in. I would like to try to round up a couple of frags either in donations or for chump change. ITS FOR A GOOD CAUSE!! This is the type of guy that would be the first to help someone else out in need so hopefully there are more of us out there. I am located in Halifax and am willing to meet for pickup. thank you all!!!

I have some that you can have

I have beginner corals like toadstools etc., but I have no way of getting them that far north. If anyone from RI is heading that way, let me know.

Thanks everyone! I'm really happy to help to help him out and knew that there were other people in the hobby that would help a guy as such!! Ill me pm-ing you guys later tonight when I get home. Again thank you!!

I've got some sinularia, zenia, nice german blue stylo frag, plating hydnophora, odds and ends.

I can give some fish

i got a koralia 750 here ............

I got some Damsels and DIY liverock, fully cured and has been in a tank for few months, you can donate. I may have a couple 36" T5 lights you can have too,.. I will have to check. I will scrounge up what I can. I know his pain

In the process of moving from Manhattan to Boston after dropping out of medical school, I lived with my family for few months. I rented a uhaul to move all my aquarium stuff (huge pain). After a couple months I went to visit my friend in Hawaii and I got a call that one of my surge protectors went up in flames but it was controlled and put out. however my tank never got plugged back in. I lost over 6k in inverts, corals and fish. The fire came from someone knocking out the siphon tube for my overflow, (so it also flooded the room) So I bucked up and started over.

I found an apartment in Allston And looked at it as a good opportunity to start a new larger tank. I started up a 150g and moved all the surviving animals, sand, LR and few softies that made it. (A few galexia corals came back from the dead! There were seriously a fossil and and started showing polyps after a little while! )
I had the tank running for about a week empty then decided to load it up. 48 hours after getting everything in the tank and up and running, most of the 150g of water ended up on my studio apartment floor. (Yes I have a 150g in a studio) I filled as many buckets as I could with the water pouring out of the tank and put all the animals and corals in them,.. after the whole ordeal aside from a few snails and crabs I only lost a cleaner shrimp! He was massive though. My apartment reeked for a couple weeks after. I would also find a hermit crab or two crawl across my floor for a couple days. During the rush I grabbed as many tanks as I could and started them up keeping what I have alive. there was no order to the tanks being set up it was pretty random with the limited space I have. So, this is where I'm at now. Tanks everywhere in my apartment and a silicones-less 150g currently being worked on. Its all prepped, stand reinforced and ready to be siliconed tonight.

As I was cleaning out the tank and getting rid of the silicone I was using detaurated alcohol and started to get nauseous. So I opened up windows and went back to working on the tank. I heard a noise and looked over and saw a man leaning into my window gripping my MacBook Pro! he ripped it out the window and took off. I jumped off the step stool onto my desk, dove out the window, tucked, rolled, hopped over a fence and started chasing him. He was about 10ft away and I got pins and needles and started to pass out (prob from the cleaning chemicals). My vision went black but I kept running, unfortunately in the wrong direction. He got away.

Lately I think I have had the worst luck.
If I haven't given up this hobby yet,.. I don't think I ever will.

I did start a new goal in mind during all of this mess. I created a "hospital tank" out of a 55g with dividers for when I got new fish for the 150g,.. however its packed with my corals in LR from the crash. I want to use the Intended hospital tank to breed clownfish. I have read Joyce Wilkinson's "ClownFishes" a few times and think i have what it takes. My goal is to breed them for fun however, take detailed notes to put together a free digital educational book publishing my notes and suggested advice to the community.

Sorry for the novel,.. Just haven't been able to vent to anyone about all of this yet, figured now was a good time.

Cheers

Wow, thanks everyone!!! I think I'm getting to the point where we should be good with the donations. I want to help him jump start his tank not completely stock it lol. I'm very amazed at all the quick responses from everyone. I will be making the rounds this weekend as I have a tank set up for all the frags and have been waiting to tell mike about this. I will bring him over once I have some corals collected. I can't wait to see his face!

Here are 4/5 sections of the 55g tank which I built for the initial purpose to house new / sick fish.

Sounds like a horror story!!! You have to be determined if you haven't thrown in the towel yet!! I can only imagine the feeling of chaos you must have been going through. I will probably grab some rock from you and once I let him know about what I've done I'll inform him of the fish people had offered. As we all know the most enjoyable part of a tank I think is setting it up and developing a game plan.

I'll be up north for one lasts snowboarding weekend. I could link up with you next week. Hopefully by that time I will have the 150g set up and I will know what rock can't fit. At the moment I have a 55g, 25g, 30g, and a 10g pretty much packed with LR. Unfortunately I will donating the ones that didn't make the cut for the 150g main tank,.. As I am determined to build the best tank I possibly can to redeem my self for troubles.

You guys are in Halifax?

I'm in Kingston, MA. Please let me know if you need help with the setup, transportation, whatever you need. I'm down the street.

I have some teal candy canes and I am sure I have some other stuff he can have. Shoot me a pm when he is ready for coral.

This may be a little off subject but being new to BRS and seeing this kind of dedication to the hobby and to a fellow reefer is just awesome!

I am amazed as well, this outcome shows that there's still good people out there!! I told his wife and she had tears come to her eyes. Im doing some pick up tonight so I can invite him over again and show him what I have so far. After nemo destroyed alot of tanks I saw alot of people offering frags to people who lost tanks. I gave a couple of heads of frogspawn to 2 different people who were more than appreciative. This alone is enough of a reason if any to join BRS
