Want Seahorse Fry?

Okay...

I have a tank full of maturing fry that will be okay when I go away for a week. Gustavo can feed them frozen.

I also have a kreisel that has about 3 dozen 1 and 3 week old fry that are dependant on BBS for survival.

I was wondering if anyone is adventerous enough to take them from me and try to raise them. You may have little to no luck, but it'd be better than the zero chance that they have while I'm away.

For what it's worth.. I get fry every two weeks, like clockwork. When I return from travel, I'm back into raising them. In the mean time, if you want to get on my "adopt a fry" list for those clutches that I can't raise, let me know.

Dave

They just need bbs? I have a 12g setup running with just a little rock and sand and macro. heater is covered with mesh and intake to the filter can be covered too. Could I add BBS to that and be good for them?

What do you mean by BBS for survival....?

bob

I think that means they need to eat live freshly hatched baby brine shrimp.

Could I keep these in my fuge? It is 15 gallon with low flow.....has rockwork, several types of caulurpa, halimeda, and chaeto.....not to mention live brine shrimp already in there, pods, etc. Or should I wait till they're bigger and eating frozen? and still keep them in there?

Thanks for the incredible and immediate interest...but Armando...who is set up for any fry rearing is ready to take them. He'll take the new fry and Gustavo will feed the rest.

Thanks again...and again..if you are interested in future fry and are willing to make the investment in the proper care, let me know. I can not possibly keep ALL the fry that my herd provide...but hope to help/teach others to do so.

Dave

I would like to try a batch someday especially if they are large enough to take bbs.

Cindy....YOU are one that I'd not hesitate to give fry to... get the systems going.... and PM me... a batch is yours....

For those who think this is "wrong"...realize that I have over 200 born every two weeks and I can not possibly raise them all....

IF any of you are willing to learn, and take on the challenge....I'll supply the fry.

Cindy... you, are one who is ready....if you really want to try them let me know.

Dave

Here is a pic of the running setup. I'm not sure if it is sufficient for them, let me know if it would work or if I would need something different.

It is a 12g with a small ammount of rock, sand, plastic plants, macro, and fake driftwood. No sump. It has been up for a while and seems pretty stable. There is a food trainer in there too (for fish, not sure if the same thing could be used for baby seahorses).

im in worcester, i could possibly give it a try, i am set up for brine shrimp hatching, although i haven't tried it yet, i would surely give it a try

PMed Armando to take some more fry.

Ponyboy gave birth again this morning. If he can't take them, I'm putting together a list of folks who do want to take the challenge from time to time. A sort of "Fry Foster Care" :D They will be yours to do whatever you wish; keep, trade, sell, whatever.

Some will take baby brine immediately, they are pretty good sized this time. Others in the hatch will need rotifers. Let me know if you are interested and I'll get you on my list of adoptees.

Time to siphon more fry...enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Hi Dave,
I would like to try a few. I have a 10-gal QT set up and is fully cycled, but it has LR in it. Is that a bad thing for fry? It also has a lot of the surplus grape caulerpa from my main 10g. I also just stocked it on Friday with tigger pods.
Thx!

David,

Are they all Reidi fry (I think I remember you saying that once)? Do you keep Erectus too?

Thanks,
Diane

Diane,

All are Reidi. Yellow to Yellow breeding. I hope to get some oranges and reds in there in the near future.

Jebar.. go see my kreisel description etc. at:

Gina/Cindy and others...

Until the fry actually 'hitch', they need to be kept in a kreisel system. This keeps them in constant motion with their foods and doesn't allow them to get stuck on the top of the water where they most often take in too much air and could die or at a minimum, have bouyancy issues for life.

Once they do hitch, and are taking food with vigor, they can be kept in a smallish grow out tank. Personally, I don't use LR in the same chamber as the fish. Too many issues with bristle worms, hydroids and other things that could quickly take down fry. I do use a tank divider to separate the fry from ANYTHING that could hurt them, this includes mechanical filtration, heaters etc. See the piccy below:

Hmmm, I'll have to work out a divider system and move that rock. I think you should run over and pick up this pair so I can be first in line for their babies :) j/k

The male is behind the branch:

 Drooling...

That orange is beautiful! Are those yours? I've seen some orange and reds at some LFS but they want a hundred if not hundreds for them. I'm not willing to pay that much for one. I can find them later...at a more reasonable price.

I do need and want to mix up the genetics here. I really have to give my boy a break. He has fry every two weeks now, on the mark! I knew that I'd have more on Sunday and set up for it Saturday night. The father is really unreal. He no sooner expelled the final fry when he was taking another egg transfer from his mate. His pouch looks like an old leather jacket!! I'm thinking of putting him in the juvi tank so a) he can have a break and b) others have said that by associating mature fish with fry, the fry make an easier transition into the frozen foods. They tend to emulate the older fish and snick up the foods that the larger seahorse eat.
